RE: Question About the Empire Builder

I have only seen it with two units. The Roadrailers get added/cutoff at St. Paul, so I guess two units are sufficient to haul it through the mountains as they are in the flatter midwest.Todd Jones

I've never seen or heard of them adding a unit at St. Paul. (I used to work there and was at Midway several times when the Builder made it's stop.)btw-I see this train about every trip I make.As for the Roadrailer question; The Builder hauls Railers between Chicago and St. Paul. They are cut off at Midway on the Minnesota Commercial where the Amtrak depot is located.Todd Jones

RE: Question About the Empire Builder

Well back a few years ago both #7 and #8 ran with three units on average and on occasion even four units. But as Todd mentions they only run with two units on average now. During 2001 they had been running with two P40/42 units and a F40 but that stopped about the time the budget crunch really started to hit.

Question About the Empire Builder – image 8

I have a picture in my 2001 Amtrak Travel Planner that has four units on the front of the train...I saw the train in Wisconsin Dells, WI this past summer, it had quite a few Amtrak reefers and boxcars on the rear...------------------------------------------------------------I'll never let go of the railroad that inspired me to be involved with trains, the Union Pacific!Question About the Empire Builder – image 9John Ekhoff

Question About the Empire Builder – image 10

I made a semi-prototypical consist in MSTS with 3 P42's pulling, then I chopped it down to 2 P42's, and Im still surprised it managed to pull 50 cars alltogether, I guess its just cuz there passeneger loco's and no one really thinks of them hauling more then 6 cars
