Marias 3.1, wish I wasn't so stupid, will not run – image 2

If you are stupid, it is not because of anything you said or did here! I also have run into the same problem and seen that by pulling the new Marias out, MSTS loads and runs and by trying to install, MSTS crashes and will not load. I too followed the instructions ... (admire the protocol and layout). I am looking forward to a clearing up of what is probably an oversight on my part or ... at worst a simple glitch! Will post here if I can find my error.

I'm not running the final version that Bob uploaded yet so I can't help you yet. The last version of the install had a problem with Xtracks but that should have been fixed.I guess I'll have to download the release version and try it. Probably take about a week (damn I hate dial-up!)Paul

RE: marias 3.1, wish I wasn't so stupid, will not run

Marias 3.1, wish I wasn't so stupid, will not run – image 4

Here are the sizes of my relevant zips:
1 12,559KB
2 12,750
3 12,421
4 12,075
5 12,761
6 14,860
7 12,075I got these sizes via the Explorer. I notice (not for the first time) that downloaded zip files do not necessarily agree with stated size on line. This is probably not the problem. I don’t know the size of my new Marias Directory because when I install it, MSTS crashes and well ... best to leave it for a while ... I’m thinking.I’m not using Xtracks. Currently holding to see if others experience similar problems. Here’s how yours truly handled the install:MSTS is at the 1.2 or higher level. Downloaded via new broadband modem! Coupled with “GetRight” this has been smooth sailing city!1. Did unzip each of the MP31*.zip archives to temporary space. Like the concept. Very practical.2. Went to each of the MP31x directories and copied the respective files named MP311-7 .exe to my Routes directory. 3. Executed the MP31x.exe files in sequence. Allowed the creation of new Marias31 directory. NOTE! Had temporarily renamed old Marias3 to “Sarias3" Does new ap need to draw from old Marias3? If so, this might be my “problem.” And while on the side here ... let me say this is good stuff to me! I KNOW this great new route will be here and running soon! This this .... diddling ... it is just like well it is ... “real” maintenance. 4. Did continue until all 7 MP31x.exe files had been run.5. The DOS batch file did automatically run, copying files from the original MSTS routes into Marias Pass 3.1.6. When the activity in the DOS window was finished I did close the window, and Marias Pass 3.1 appeared ready to run!7. I went back to the temporarily unzipped archives, selected and copied the various doc files to the new Marias31 directory. I was excited!8. I did then erase all 7 of the temporary MP31x directories. 9. I invoked Train Sim and got the crash send don’t send.
Ran Norton Utilities Integrator, (no unusual problems) rebooted, tried MSTS again ... SLAM crash. 10. “Soft” reinstalled MSTS. Tried to run TS: Slam crash.11. Deleted the new Marias, replaced the first S in Sarias3 with an M. Tried MSTS again ... Presto Molly ... MSTS is runnin again. And the looking and tinkering goes on. Will post here if I find an answer.jivajiva

RE: marias 3.1, wish I wasn't so stupid, will not run

When you renamed Marias3 to Sirias3, was there a USA2 sitting around? Either the original USA2 Marias Pass or MP3 (Marias3) renamed to USA2 has to be present. If you didn't have this, you can rename Marias3 to USA2 now (just change the directory name), rerun the installme.bat and all the files should then be copied.Bob Siederer

Good point Kevin....I have been having the same problem as these guys.....I can make MP31 work until I install X-Tracks and then PUKE... ET phone BillG and the whole nine yards.... It doesn't seem to matter if I install X-Tracks before or After MP31..... I have to have X-Tracks to support other routes that I use... So I am screwed... LOL!Hope they fix this soon.... RE: marias 3.1, wish I wasn't so stupid, will not run

LAST EDITED ON Dec-14-02 AT 11:23 PM (EST)

I've tried this little jewel about 4 times, twice not changing anything and the game still won't run although when you take it out of the Routes folder the game will run. Before you go jumping off the ship without the captain's permission I do have MSTS Version 1.2 installed (or I would not be able to run certain activities on the NEC or on MP3.0) (and I know my way around computers) I should note to all of you before you flood me with answers and questions on how I did that, after I removed MP3.1 and invoked MSTS it works. 1st time:
read instructions, yadda yadda yadda so on so on so forth, ran the installation, invoked MSTS. It crashes. Take the folder out then rebooted my computer ran MSTS. Works fine2nd time:
Same as the first although ran over the instructions with a fine tooth comb (when I installed MP3.0 I made a mistake on one of the components and it didn't show up in the menu, reread instructions copied the crucial component and after that it shows up). did the same as the first. It crashes. Proceed to move a duplicate copy of this route into my Trash bin (it's named that because i changed it, It's been alot more than that. My Network Places icon has been renamed to something I can't say here, but rest assured it's part of the 7 dirty words you can't say over the air. (except in Canada)3rd Try:I ran the DOS Batch File after the Batch file ran after the installation just to make sure. That went fine. Started up MSTS. It crashes. 4th Time:Did the exact same thing as the other 3 times except renamed my USA2 route to Marias3 (after reading the forum) and renaming Marias3 to something else. Followed instructions, ran DOS Batch File. Seemed to be fine except at the last part where I slowed it down and saw that some of the textures did not get copied in where they were supposed to go. Renamed the renamed routes to their original settings and names. ran the DOS Batch file again. Everything copied fine, so went to run MSTS. It crashes. My question is this especially to Bob Schreider if he's looking at this. (btw MP3 was kick a** loved the way everything was laid out and never knew almost 11,000 people downloaded it) If we are following the instructions according to the way it's laid out inthe ReadMe what are we all doing wrong? Why does the Train-Sim crash when we invoke it after installing marias Pass 3.1? And then my question is why does MSTS work AFTER we've removed MP 3.1? I hope to hell I can get this one solved soon, as I can't wait to play it

Bob,
Could you please tell me exactly what has to preinstalled in order to get Marias 3.1 to work? I am new to Train Sim and as such have a pristine 1.2 install. I am sure you have this info in the readme with your route but I would like to know the details before I download it over this very slow modem. Edit: OK, I went and looked at the file structure and I see there is a USA2 folder in a default installation. So I don't need anything else, correct? Thanks,
Matt

Marias 3.1, wish I wasn't so stupid, will not run – image 12

I have managed to get MP 3.1 installed and running on my system. Heres what I did to fix the problems I ran into to get it to work:1. Installed all files per instructions.2. Ran the new route Marias31 through Route Riter. It found some missing files and offered to copy them from existing routes. I let it do this.3. At this point Marias31 would crash MSTS after selecting it.4. Removed Marias3 (MP 3.0) route from Route directory, I still have the default USA2 also.5. Marias 3.1 now runs fine. It appears that on my system Marias 3.0 and Marias 3.1 can't coexist despite what the documentation says.

I got mine to run on the first go. Here's what I did:1. Unzip all 7 files
2. Run each zip exe, which will create a directory of marias31, in each unzipped folder
3. copy the marias 3.1 folder from zip 1 to routes directory
4. copied all others to the newly created marias 3.1
5. in zip 7 I copied the install bat to the marias 3.1 folder and ran it letting it copy all files.
6. then deleted all but my original zip files.Looks like the activities are in folders of their own and have to be unpacked. But I was able to run in the explore mode.Hopes this helps you.WDC

RE: marias 3.1, wish I wasn't so stupid, will not run

Well, clearly something's wrong, but I don't know what. I have two copies of MSTS on my system, one is my usual copy, the other is a pristine install of MSTS 1.0, updated to 1.2. I have installed Marias31 following my own instructions and MSTS comes up and runs just fine. My pristine copy has XTracks installed, the other copy does not. It runs on both.As for installme.bat, that was generated by routeriter and should only have to be run once. If you don't have one of the default routes handy, then when the bat file runs it won't copy everything. You can find the missing route and make it available and rerun the bat file to fix that oversite. This is true of any route using this type of installation method.I've also had both MP30 and MP31 in MSTS at the same time without problems. There are a host of things that can cause MSTS to fail to start. Since it fails for you when MP31 is in the ROUTES directory, and starts when it isn't there, the problem is obviously somewhere in the MP31 stuff. Missing textures and shapes should not cause MSTS to call home, but then again lots of things shouldn't cause it to call home, but it does anyway.I'll keep looking though.Bob Siederer

I didn't have any problems at all.I installed as instructed, moved the foder to the routes folder and ran the install bat.I also have x-track installed.I'm still using version 3.3 of x-track.maybe there is a problem with version 3.4 that marias3.1 doesn't like.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-15-02 AT 02:20 AM (EST)

1) I unpacked mp311.exe separately to a temp folder
2) and then moved the contents to folder Marias31 in Routes.
3) deleted the contents in the temp folder before unpacking mp312
4) did so with all 7 exes
5) the last (mp317) unpacked, and started to run a install.bat
6) which I stopped.
7) Moved the contents of the last part to marias31
8) Checked the marais31 folder
9) moved out the “Marias31 Reworked Activities”
.& “Non-standard Rolling Stock” folders back to temp.
.ran the install.bat, and started MSTSand is running as it should
and it does look good!

No problem with the route here. The only problem I've seen sofar was with one the wagons or loks included. I installed a few to check'em out but, I then couldn't start MSTS or the editor so I deleted them again. (Conbuilder couldn't find anything wrong) I haven't investigated which wagon or train is causing the trouble.

RE: marias 3.1, wish I wasn't so stupid, will not run

WinXP Home, Plain Jane MSTS installation, tried everything and Marias 3.1 simply will not work. Freezes the app completely. Tried expanding exe files to a temp folder and copying them over manually, leaving out the unexpanded activities and rolling stock files, nothing doing. Three times, always the same, then when I go back and delete Marias31 folder, MSTs runs perfectly. I think it is something in the way the seven separate exe files work - I also see that despite having run the bat file several times, there are quite a few less texture files and some others, compared to Marias 3.0 and other routes. Don't know if Marias31 is supposed to have a lot less texture files and so on, maybe it isn't that. But if not, then what is happening? No X-track installed either. Checking the .bat file against what actually gets copied into the Marias31 folder would be an endless task - I might not live long enough to finish the job.The original MariasPass, MP3 and Marias1948 installed and work flawlessly (other than the Cutbank problem of course) - I have other 3rd party routes too, including Ohio River and several European routes, never had a bit of trouble with any of them. This is the first route that absolutely refused to work. Bing

RE: marias 3.1, wish I wasn't so stupid, will not run

Installed and worked first time of trying. This is how I did it.Expanded all 7 files to (in my case) D:\a\Stopped the batch file as soon as it started.Moved the Marias3 file to the routes folder.Went into the route and doubleclicked the installme.bat file and let it do its stuff.Ran it through Route Riter. I reported 2 missing files which it then copied from another default route. The two missing files were:JP1gantry2.s
JP1gantry2.sdFired up MSTS, selected Marias3.1 with the explore activity. It generated the necessary files and away we went.I also works fine with Marias3.0 installed as wellSystem Specs Processor: GenuineIntel Family Pentium4 15 Model 2 2.3 GHz Stepping 4

I don't know if this is significant... but before I installed MP3.1 I moved MP3.0 to a backup drive. I saw no point in having both but in the event of something going wrong, I wanted MP3.0 available. Is it possible that there is some sort of conflict arising when both Mp3.0 and MP3.1 are in the routes folder?????

a1tpnt2_5drgtmnl.s, a1tpnt5drgtmnl.s,a1t45dyardrgtmnl.sthose shape files were already in the route\shapes folder , so I don't thing that was the issue.I DO think that the error i got IS an issue... error = "Does not support circular track"been to long since I played around in the files for the sim...

RE: marias 3.1, wish I wasn't so stupid, will not run

Couldnt be any easier to install from my point of view.Open each zip, double click each marias31 exe file in turn telling each one to install to your msts default folder\ROUTES\marias31.There is no need at all to extract to a temp folder ( i dont know why people insist on telling you to do this).
On my machine after the last file installs (marias317.exe) the batch file runs automatically,if it doesnt then double click it from the Routes\marias31 folder which is where it installs to.I have xtracks v3.4 installed ,with tsection.dat v00011I installed one of the re-done default activities, started msts and selected marias31,it built the terrain buffers and the activity started without problem.O.G.

Just an observation, for what that's worth.I am in the process of downloading it now, but over a modem it's going to take a while. Hopefully I won't have this problem.

Xtracks is the secret. Just loaded it up, and Marias31 works fine. It doesn't matter if you leave Marias3 in the Route folder or not.

Viola!Oops, that was the name of a girl friend from ... well, let's say it wasn't yesterday. Try again.VOILA!!!!Xtacks 3.4 definitely, posilutely required. Installed user-only Xtacks files to \Global folder. Reinstalled Marias 3.1. It's ALIVE!!!! Just like downtown. I think Xtacks does a good job on smoothing out kinky (pardon) track, at least it seems that way.Hooked my 4 X DD40X + 60 X US Graincar and stomped out of Shelby to the tune of a very nice 59fps, a bit higher than usual. Lower poly
count? Heading for Cutbank and we will see about that perverted crossover. Will inspect train from roadside and see if the accordion effect is still there. Actually, I would kind of miss it if it was totally absent. Not only unlimited joy of operation - this time the Marias 3.1 installation only produced 1,250 file fragments. Last night it was 3,185 - I believe a new record for creating fragmented files in a single installation - that is the North American record. Thank goodness for Diskeeper 7; I wouldn't turn on a PC without it installed. For those without the newest Xtracks, the file is in the library, is not all that big, even for a dialup. For broadband its a snap. MSTS alone justifies my monthly cable ISP bill, which ain't peanuts I will tell you, but 1.6 Meg connect speed ain't chopped liver either.Have a Very Marias Christmas!Ho, ho, ho ... hohohohohoho. RE: marias 3.1, wish I wasn't so stupid, will not run

If Marias31 isn't an X-track route, it is doing a very good imitation of being that way. If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, talks like a duck ... it probably IS a duck. I don't mind, not really, becuase I have been meaning to look into X-track, now I have it installed. But I think the route builders ought to publish a revised ReadMe file, reflecting what many of us have found to be true: No tickie, no launry. No X-track, no Marias31.Would it also be accurate that SOME users don't have X-track, installed Marias31 and are able to run it? Could be, but there seem to be a lot of us where that isn't true. From not being able to load the game, period, to full use of everything is dramatic to say the least.Bing

In the accompanied read me it say's,
it is an X-track route; but no need to DL X-tracks 'cause we provided the x-track shapes in the shape folder.
But like i said here, it is possible that it still needs the x-track Tsection.dat to be in the Global folder, and it seems i was right Greets Henk.

XTracks, or no XTracks

I'm glad some of you have figure out how to get around the problem. Now I think I know what is wrong and will endeavor to fix it. See if this makes sense:In the original tsection.dat shipped with MSTS we determined that there were several missing shapes. Spots were left for them in the tsection.dat, but the shapes were not taken off of the CD. Now that I think about it, I must have updated my tsection.dat file to include these missing files after I copied the files from XTracks. That means my tsection.dat is unique. I did this so long ago that I forgot about it. This would explain why installing XTracks now fixes the problem...the tsection included with XTracks has these missing entries filled in too. I did not use any unique XTracks track sections, just the missing right hand manual switches. I think that would explain the problem some of you are seeing. To make this even more troublesome, I checked with Okrasa to make sure this distribution would work with and without XTracks. Obviously I missed a step. So, if this makes sense to some of you more knowledgable folks out there, I'll update the readmes to reflect that XTracks is needed.

RE: XTracks, or no XTracks

Bob - I would opt for changing the documentation. I've had the same thing happen to me, changing a game engine and forgetting it had been done, making play of a scenario next to impossible for anyone besides myself ... the memory goes second, I forget what goes first ...Marias31 running fine, the pine trees look very nice, at the place where the poly count is as high as I have found in Marias - northbound right around mile marker 1300 - I am getting a respectable 24-30 fps, with anisotropic filtering set at Level 2 (GeF4) and FSAA also at 2. A bit of stuttering and lurching, but it wouldn't be TS if that were not going on, would it? I can get higher fps with the filtering and anti-aliasing values knocked down, but I like the quality settings. With Xtracks AND the above settings, the hit coming out of Shelby is no more than 7 or 8 fps - 51 instead of 59. That is certainly acceptable. Sol - Maybe you are at the "bite the bullet" stage. Defrag, clean out extraneous registry values, give it another try, if that doesn't work do what all of us have to do from time to time: Uninstall TS and do a fresh reinstall. If it were me, I would scrub the reg of ALL references to TS after uninstall. That includes MRU's, which can be a pain. Marias31 works and works fine, offhand I see no reason why it shouldn't once the shapes question is addressed. With Xtracks installed I see no performance hit and it appears to be on its way to becoming a de facto TS standard, so it was time to implement anyway. If it is possible to post just a text file in the library explaining the above, why not do that. I'm happy I made the upgrade to Xtracks, at this stage I am.Bing

Sol, the error you are seeing is something I've never seen. As far as I can tell, it has nothing to do with the xtracks/tsection problem others are finding. Not having ever seen the error, I can't speculate on what might need to be done to get around it, or what caused it.Bob Siederer

>sol Sol - Just a thought. Might not solve your problem, then again it can't hurt to try: Have you run mprofile.exe from the TS main folder? Give it a try.Have you checked the registry for errors and dupes? You haven't stated what your OS is, so it is difficult to make a specific rec along those lines. You might have an MRU problem, if you have been moving file folders around. MRU Blaster will take care of this - its freeware. But ... it really sounds like you need to uninstall and do a fresh reinstall, I would not reinstall OVER an existing TS installation, that has the potential of making a bad situation worse.Bing
