While downloading activities, I have found alot of activity authors suggesting to upgrade locomotive and car physics. Do the file libraries have these updates, and if so, what updates are really neccessary?

Yes the physics updates are in the file library. You can find all the ones I did by searching for Boudoin and Physics in the library.
I am not sure what you mean by really necessary? Inorder to do what? If all you want to do is watch trains go by then none are necessary. If you want the trains to perform more like the actual version being modeled (why it is called a simulator), then you will need to update all that were not made with those preinstalled. For example most of the GE Dash 7 and Dash 8 locomotives have V4.1 physics already installed. None of the default locomotives have very good physics models compared to the updates.
The best way to update an individual file is to cut and paste in two large sections from the updates. This will preserve the light and size lines for your particular model. The specifics of how this is done can be found in several earlier threads about this. You can also get a program in the library that will allow many pieces of equipment to be updated at once for each parameter, engmd142.zip.
Hope this is helpful,
Bob BoudoinBTW,I would be happy to answer specific questions you may have if you need help on anything involved.
These are the physics files:
alrsv42.zip
89gev411.zip
baldwins.zip
gpphy41.zip
fmv41phy.zip
sdphy41.zipIf you want to sample some of the work, see what it does, try these two files which already have the physics updates installed:
gp7tp.zip
c337bnsf.zip
