I know that you can make screenshots, but are they any programs to make clips from MSTS?
Thanks!

>www.snagit.com I have snagit, and it will do that, IF you can get the framerate settings just right, otherwise you endup watching everything getting redrawn. Makes for a very sloppy looking movie. I haven't figured out how to get it set quite right so that it looks like it does when you run the sim, and I'm sure that alot of it depends on the type of video card, processor speed, etc. in your particular machine. If, and when I get it figured out, I'll be happy to post my machine specs and the settings I used to get it to work. Can you make screen-movies? – image 7

Also, videotaping a computer screen (or any capturing with a camera)presents difficulties in itself, mainly that the refresh rate of the monitor is likely to be different than the refresh/frame rate of the camera or recording device. That's why when you watch the news, and for one reason or another they show a computer or TV screen, you can see a dim black bar moving down the computer screen--that's because they usually don't bother to set the refresh rate of the computer screen they're taping to a rate consistent with the camera they're using.

Something like that (sorry for the long download time, server it today abnormally busy)?<Can you make screen-movies? – image 22>or <Can you make screen-movies? – image 23>This was made hitting repeteadly the screencapture key. In my system (Win98) this produces a serie of pcx images stored in Train Simulator foder, that I can with an Gif-animator put together on a (big) gif image and use direct in e-mails and websites.

RE: Can you make screen-movies?

Win-Tv cards have video in and most GeForce cards have video out it should be possible. You need to record to tape first - I tried the GeForce video out into the Win-Tv card video in, but with MSTS and the capture program running at the same time, the frame rate was not impressive Another alternative - a digital video camera that handles DV in/out via the USB port... One I ordered for christmas arrived yesterday so I will certainly be giving it a try...

Well now... Look at this...I'm correcting my own misinformation... There is... I repeat... THERE IS a way to do this without having to capture raw video from a Video Output port. Thanks go to Dominic 'KngtRider' Sharoo. He discovered a new feature of a product he'd been using to validate FPS values. He decided to share his results with me and it looks quite promising.Check this out... Goto http://www.fraps.com/ and download the latest version of FRAPS.I've not done it yet... but I've seen his results... SWEET! It captures "without" sound, but that can be fixed after-the-fact... Sooo... Is is time to make movies? You will probably need to add CODECS for your media player, but these are easily found with a quick "google".FYI: It is recommended that you convert these to DIVX format, since the AVI files will be H U G E! You will also need *time* for conversion... as this process is slow. No, I mean r e a l l y slow... You will be tying up your computer for awhile... but the results are worth it.

RE: Can you make screen-movies?

If you don't mind using an MS codec, converting to WMV format actually
gives decent compression. I captured some 2816 video at 720x348, came out to 3GB uncompressed, as a .WMV at 1500Kbs ended up as a 650 Mb file size with decent quality. Conversion time was about 4 hours.Cheers

I've got Fraps and love it! Now, how can I get sound and convert to mpg?P.S. casacota, please do NOT post that big picture again! The little one is great, I love it, but the big one puts those dial-up users (like me) in a frenzy!
Thanks!

Well, you will need to capture audio separately and then re-add it when you convert to MPG. (sorry)Can you make screen-movies? – image 30Pete Willard

The capture was done with frps, a very capable program. I captured at the Frps 15-frame rate, for it is the most acceptable for multi-media streaming over the internet and so was the target time-resolution in this case. The resulting .avi was imported to my favorite and familiar Vegas Video 3.0, where it was edited into brevity and the fades were added.Next, Sound Forge 6.0 was launched, set to record (audio only), and the little speeder was made to repeat its start-up/running sequence. Standard digital resolutions were used for recording the .wav I could have remained within Vegas Video for this step. The resulting .wav of the speeder audio then got cleaned-up in Sound Forge, and edited to match the video with start-up sequence altered and condensed to let the "grinding gear" be heard. Fades were added.I then had Vegas Video render as a Windows Media .wmv choosing what I felt was the highest value possible for streaming, in this case 523Kbps.Notes:
1. This file could easily have had full-screen resolution but would have taken much longer to render, been significantly bigger, and beyond streaming capabilities for most on-line viewers.2. The resulting 1.6 Meg size of the streaming video could have been reduced had I remembered to use a mono version of the audio track.3. As a quickie experiment, I paid little attention to visual photographic composition--I just hit record.4. Like all other things multimedia i.e., 3DS Max or GMax, Poser, Dreamweaver, Flash, Bryce, Lightwave and to a degree designing for MSTS, Video and Audio recording/editing/streaming are each kindred but separate disciplines with fairly steep learning curves and few short-cuts to skillful use other than study, practice, and the springboard tutelage present in forums like these and elsewhere both on-line and at Amazon.com exist for those not enrolled in structured coursework. I have about reached a point with 3D, that the structured coursework of a good book will be my Christmas present to myself. I have 3D Canvas, and TSM, but the Discreet product(s) clearly offer the most stability and control of the lot on my machine. GMAX and 3DS Max are so incredibly similar it's mind-boggling in wonderful ways. With GMAX, you have essentially a US$3,400 program (3DS-Max), with the added capability of integrating with Train-Sim and countless other gaming programs--for free! Kind regards,

I just downloaded Fraps, gonna take a crack at it and see what happens, just for grins and giggles. I have to agree with you about Gmax, I have it too, and though I haven't messed with it much, I am very impressed with it thus far.Can you make screen-movies? – image 36
