You didn't say what processor or video car you are using. I think what you are seeing is the simulator stopping to load another tile as you progress through the route. I have a slow system (celeron 566) and I never noticed the pauses too much due to my low frame rates (<10 average). I recently replaced my video card and my frames have increased 50-100%. The pauses are more noticable now.I used to see these pauses in Flight Simulator all the time for the same reason. The pauses are not nearly as noticable in the latest version. I think that is because they have really improved on the graphic engine.Cal Rasmussen

RE: sim problems

In addition to what Cal noted, I also had some stop-n-go action happening on a fairly
respectable machine. The cause there was a number of other apps running in the
background, most notably a virus scanner that checked files as they were accessed.
Before running the sim I stopped/exited/ended task on all but the Explorer and
Systray apps and it made vast improvements in the momentary freezes.

RE: sim problems

In addition to killing all your background aps (except of course explorer and systray) try running a program like Chacheman. It's a great little program that lets you fine tune the way windows uses available RAM. I noticed a big diference in jerkiness and experienced fewer lockups and crashes after I started using it! It also will display your available ramm, or other resources in your system tray. Very handy. You cab get it at www.outertech.com. I'm running Celeron 533, 512MB RAM, geforce2 32MB, W98.
Have fun!
JohnP.S. Some stuttering and jerkiness is normal in this sim. It has to do eith the way the sim caches files. I think we have all had this problem to some degree or another.

RE: sim problems

Hello there !This problem, as you have already seen from previous replies is normal to some extent because of the programming method used by MS/Kuju.I have found a near perfect solution for my own PC (Athlon 1.3 512 mem and fast HD). I reccommend you to try it.(1) You must turn off ALL non essential programs which are running in the background. (You'll be surprised how many there are, depends on your sys and configuration). You can do this the hard way by using CTR+ALT+DEL to terminate most programs, trouble is you have to keep repeating the process until all non-essentials are OFF.
Alternatively you can use a program like "Enditall" which I discovered was very effective as another contributor mentioned with Flight Simulator. In my opinion (only), the new version is a little too complicated and not as user-friedly as the "Old" version. Pity the file is too big to upload to you now, but if you contact me I will send it to you.(2) Another help (I personally use BOTH) is a prog called "Cacheman" which you can get free from the site http://www.outertech.com
Just load it and choose the ready made "Games" configuration included in the list and you will certainly shorten, if not completely get rid of the pause when the next tile is read.(3) Finally, a good practice is to check the resouces of your system before running MSTS. Right click on "My Computer", click "Properties" then "Performance". You should see at least 90% (I can get as high as 94% from a "clean" boot. If you have been "online" before using MSTS, then switch off and restart you computer.Hope this rather long and tedious rant will help. It HAS been dealt with several times before on this forum. All the best,

Mistral

RE: sim problems

A quick question to the user who saw improvements when he disabled the function on his anti-virus: Which program are you using? I have Norton SystemWorks 2003, and I am wondering if disabling the AutoProtect function would be the same as what you did? Thanks,
Scott

RE: sim problems

I'm using Cacheman 5.11 on Windows 2000, and I don't have those options available to me at all (and it is a registered version). Any other ideas?Scott

RE: sim problems

Ok, never mind that I don't have the 3D Games setting on my version of Cacheman. The tweaks themselves made a world of difference!! I de-activated my Norton anti-virus auto-protect, then ran the train sim. For the first time in a LONG time, I was able to run for a while without the sim locking up!! (it would always happen on an outside shot - the game would freeze-up completely, and then I would hear a succession of: game sounds, static burst, high-pitched squeal, repeat...)I was able to run the sim for over 10 minutes and got a CONSTANT 58-60 fps with absolutely NO stuttering! Now I'm off to try my results on the NEC.... Thanks for the help!!Scott
