Hi All. I use the restore function of WinME to get out of trouble.
I noticed that the last six times I defraged, with either Norton or
WinME, I lost the ability to restore to an earlier date.
Any thoughts? Thank you
John

RE: Restore and Defrag

Since this is a forum for Train Simulators, any answers you get may be less than adequate. It would probably be better if you posted in some Windows forums.....you might want to try http://www.wopr.comLawrence

RE: Restore and Defrag

restore in particular only affects registry information and drivers etc. It will not do anything to games or applications.David

Hi David. Thank you for your reply. Can you think of any reason why defraging disables my ability to retore to a earlier date?

Hello Lawrence. I know that this is train sim forum. I tried my question in other window forum, but no help. Anyway, from what I've seen in the past, the most knowledgeable people are here.
see you

RE: Restore and Defrag

I can't say I've noticed this phenomona,but then I haven't looked,or suffered any effects of it,if it exists.
However as a restore point seems to hold specific information about the content, file allocation,of your HDD at that point, and also the same info at the present potential time, you're restoring from, perhaps a defrag,by its file reallocation feature, means that the original point ceases to exist.I may test by setting a restore point today, wait till tomorrow, check it's there, defrag and look again. If it vanishes, you've got a point,if it doesn't,you've got a problem.

Not a problem. Just pointing out, if you didn't know, that you may not get the help you need. But, then again, you may. Lawrence

RE: Restore and Defrag

Hi RRene. The problem you had, did defrag disable system restore?
I checked Q256419, it seems to relate to registry problems. Am I
missing something? Thank you.

RE: Restore and Defrag

My sugesstion is if you have a CD-RW or DVD-R drive, back-up your system's files on that at least once a month, I do it too, so don't worry about it. This way you can go to the CD to replace the files. Instruct your software program to backup the systems files onto it. I've never used windows ME, or should I say Winblo*s Me (have to keep it clean though don't want the moderators up my rear end), I've always used Windows NT products and windows 2000. More better than 95, 98 or ME
