I have my dad's old American Flyer Trains. My favorites are the two Hudson (NOT steamlined) steam locomotives. They even have sound!

Thanks for the nice comments!I thought it might be fun to show what I used as a guide for this re-skin. If anyone asks, I'll upload it. It requires the free TrainArtisan Light Mountain be previously installed.Snow was added to the tender image, it's not a texture. I figured the loco was too hot. The model is not mine, it's an e-bay special. Kind regards,

Your post and mine crossed in the ether! Seems American Flyer did several heralds--always second fiddle to their own! Odd placement, but as I show, it's where it went.50 years ago, I had one too but it was in lots better shape than the photo! All we need now are a few of those tin buildings with the fold-over tabs on the roof and a half dozen or so candy and cereal cars for it to haul. Oh, and the red caboose! Can't forget that.Oh, and we need a giant transformer to place trackside! What fun.Kind regards,

fwiw, I still have three of the American Flyers sitting on a shelf in basically 'pristine' condition. I had an HO setup in the basement and left a place to integrate the AF, but they ended up taking up too much real estate. Haven't checked to see what they're worth, but wouldn't part with them anyway. As you say .. 50 years of memories

Hey I had the mail car that worked also....
Mine had smoke and a whistle...
Also had an Atlantic (4-4-2) and a "Dreyfus" Hudson....
What I wanted was the NP PA set but never got it....
I did get an EP5 however....
All got lost/stolen in My Parents move to Florida some 25 years ago... (My little brothers kept adding on to the sets after I went in the Navy so there was a lot more than that when it disappeared)
Also lost was my Father's Lionel NYC S3 Electric set from about 1920.... This really hurt as it was the Family Christmas Tree set....Chuck Schneider

G'day all!I'm happy to see these thoughtful replies which make the presentation efforts even more the pleasure.RobertR, nice to know you value your model railroading roots and preserve them. John Roth, celebrate your age! It comes with some wonderful privileges as you're likely discovering.Jim, why am I not surprised you can recall not just the specific model, but its number, and the exact year you got it! What an asset you are hereabouts. I'm sure you recognized your wonderful PortOgden6 in my screenshot. Mark, I'm most enjoying meeting the other old geezers in the crowd. Happy to have brought back a few memories. As I was doing it, I thought how odd it was to be using MSTS to add a measure of drivable realism to a childhood toy--which added a measure of realism to the just handful of electrified toys that moved under their own power--until a few days after Christmas. My dad has an old American Flyer from before WWII, I think it is a
4-8-4. We took it to a model train show and it worked perfectly, smoke and all. One person wanted it for $8,000 after it ran. The original ad for it claimed it could pull 82 cars.Only some here will remember – image 24In 1943 a series of allied experiments were undertaken to render a ship invisible to enemy radar, the results of these tests were never released to the public. The finale of these tests which ultimately caused the cancellation of the project was known as: THE PHILADEPHIA EXPERIMENT.

Hey guys, I also remember with joy my train set. It was a set of F-units (AB) in SANTA FE colors. pulling a freight consist with caboose. This was in "O" scale. So it was big. It was the three track type. And it had two remotely operated switches. And lots of track. This was in 1960 when I got it. And I thought it was a new set. Then I found out several years later that my Dad had bought it for himself to play with around 1954 untill I was old enough, of course to handle it. It used to drive my cat crazy watching that train, especialy when it disapeared into the tunnel, with the headlight shining. More than once the cat went after the train into the tunnel, and had to be drug out. I played with it until I was well into my teens. And it was sold in the early 70's after I was in the Navy. I wish I still had it. But along with youth, it's long gone, but fun to remember.
Check out the attached photo looks just like my train set.

Wow, Buddy,The Marx trains were wind-up, I believe. A valued collector's item for those old enough to remember and if I were you, I'd sure set it out in an honorable place. Thanks for contributing to this thread.Phil, I saw one of those Santa Fe's on e-Bay but Nell's will kill me for posting collector photos to excess. Wonderful stuff. Great story.John, you're on! I will upload my skin and try to make installation and integration as painless as possible.Enforcer231, that's quite the treasure you have in the family. You might want to express your appreciation for it now.Kind regards,

I still have my original Lionel set given to me for Christmas 1948. I also have a boxed set in new condition from 1941 and a 255E with 3 passenger cars from 1935 in the original boxes with the original instructions manual. I have collected Lionel since 1950.Wouldn't part with any of them for the world.

Mike, That train set must be worth a good bit these days. I doubt if there are very many working models around. I'm so glad you posted your story to start this string. So much good memories to share with everyone. I was thinking of that christmas long ago just the other day. And wondering how many of us that post here, had a christmas which involved our first sight of a model trainset.I have enjoyed all of the stories very much. Merry Christmas to everyone.

RE: Only some here will remember . . .

I was wondering if anyone would mention the Marx tin sets. The were not all wind up. Mine was electric.I too had the Santa Fe hood units somewhere around 1953. I finally had to go outside and ride my new bike because my father and uncle would not stop playing with the train long enough for me to get a chance. I thought the present had my name on it but I was young and may have been mistaken.I found out many years later that my dad and uncle did not have much of a childhood so I guess it is understandable.

I received an American Flyer Hudson named the "Silver Bullet" in 1953. It was chrome, had a blue stripe down the side, and it had three coaches that lit at night. There was a red and white water tank that had a glass riser tube that also was lit at night. There were street lights that did not have wires but glowed in the dark. It had a crossing marker that flashed as the wheel flanges ran across it. Yes, there were the smoke cartridges. I can still smell that smoke!!I believe that the engine was the same class engine as the American Flyer Girls Train that has a pink engine and tender with pastel colored freight cars.We gave my Silver Bullet to my younger cousin in West Va in 1960 when I got a "new" HO scale train set by Marx. There is a children's museum in Portsmouth, VA that has one of the Silver Bullets and coaches as well as the Girls Train. They were donated by the Lancaster Train Museum in Suffolk, Va. after its founder died a few years ago.p.s. Never did like Lionel when I was a child. I despised that third rail. Was not prototype!!Carlyle Thompson

Actually I was considering making a simple "Christmas Garden" layout route. But I figured no one would really be interested, plus to do it the way I want to, I'd need to know (or know someone that could) modeling and graphics and sound etc.I my minds eye (I don't know how or IF it's possible) I wanted to have a back drop that looked like someones living room, so it was like you were teeny and driving a toy train.I would want steam sound samples from one of those Lionel's that had the sound built in, and recordings of the track noises from and actual Lionel train. You get the picture..... And the big transformer towering over your head (which I had NOT thought of) would be the icing on the cake!Anywho..... memory lane:I had 2 O gauge toy trains to play with every christmas of my youth. Formerly my uncles' toys, there was a plastic MARX train set (electric) with an 0-4-0, sloped rear tender, white boxcar with a solid red plastic man the shot out with a box in his hands if you pulled the train up next to a platform that came with the set, a silver gondola and red caboose. The other set was a set of 3 or 4 American Flyer Lines pullmans, one of which was an observation car. They were yellow with green tops and all metal, the loco for that set was a ? streamlined 0-4-0 Didn't seem to be AF, and had no markings of manufacture.Layout was an oval with an X in the middle, all four switched remote control, and there were 2 sidings to park the trains in with manual switches. You could run one train, park it, then pull the other out and run it.Also had a 2 lamp signal, crossing gate, crossing signal, and semaphore, all ridiculously HUGE in scale.Damn that was alota fun....Cheers!
