So I finally get my "dream machine" P4 2.53B GHz
Soyo Dragon Ultra Platinum P4X400
512 MB DDR400
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
Win XP Pro w/SP1Everything is up and running great, until I try to run MSTS for the first time. mprofile comes up and just sits there forever. I'm talking 30 minutes and it just sits there. During this time the intro video has played (very slowly) and the intro screen has come up. Everything is molasses mode, so I step out to the task manager and see that mprofile and launcher are competing for all my CPU time.If I kill mprofile and launcher the sim will run at full speed. When I try to exit the sim it hangs too.Any ideas? BIOS, all drivers are completely up-to-date. DirectX checks out OK on dxdiag. All tests pass. Has anyone seen this problem before? I tried MSTS both the original 1.00 release as well as with the 1.1 and 1.2 updates applied.

The Radeon 9700 is supposed to be the hottest thing out there if you read the reviews, and if you have any confidence at all in ATI (which I don't). This one is supposed to be the cat's a$$ though... it's also a $400 video card.Jeff Leslie

RE: XP + new system = launcher.exe and mprofile.exe han

The only thing with mine is that it hangs when I exit the program, not when it starts up because I don't use the mprofiler or any other stuff, and I bypass the start-up microsoft screen as well.

RE: XP + new system = launcher.exe and mprofile.exe han

Hey Steve,Do you have that SOYO utility running that monitors the board voltages and the CPU temp? If so, get rid of it. I have a SOYO Dragon+ MB and had the same type of problem as you, except my MSTS never did fully load. Took me forever to find the problem, but it turned out that when I got rid of that utility they installed, everything took off and worked fine. I had to completely remove it, though, and by that I mean I ended up reformatting my drive and reloading everything from scratch. But, to prove that was the problem, I ghosted my drive and installed that utility. Sure enough, it bombed - first time.Larry

RE: XP + new system = launcher.exe and mprofile.exe han

Hmmm.I did uninstall the Winbond HWDOCTOR program. Rebooted. If I run MSTS via the icon (which calls launcher.exe) I still see launcher consuming all available CPU. If I run train.exe directly, MSTS runs fine but still hangs on exit. This is the same behavior as before, so I suspect in my case HWDOCTOR did not have any effect. As to why I say XP might be to blame, it's because the first thing I tried on this machine was to hook up my old Win98 disk and booted that. After loading all the correct drivers on the Win98 partition, MSTS worked OK and gave good frame rates. My other thought was something funny in DirectX land...I'm going to try loading Star Trek Bridge Commander tonight and see if it fares any better.

OK, I updated to the lastest c-media drivers from the SOYO website. No change in behavior, unfortunately.I took a look in the Event Viewer and it looks like the program is hanging in ntdll.dll, which is a bad thing since that's basically the OS.Not sure why others aren't seeing it, though.btw, Cajon looks great at 1280x1024x32 and 30-45 fps! (with all details turned on)SteveP.S. tried Bridge Commander which is also 3D and directX heavy, no problems.

RE: XP + new system = launcher.exe and mprofile.exe han

You just mentioned C-Media drivers - does your computer have on-board C-Media sound? If it does, I can tell you I had a motherboard with on-board C-Media sound and I had nothing but problems with it. I disabled C-Media and put in a regular sound card and it was smooth sailing from that point. That's been a couple years ago though, before MSTS came out, so I don't know if there's still a problem with it or not. Just a thought.Jeff Leslie

In your subject line, it is implied that XP may be the problem. One of the responses also implied that XP may be the problem. However, I think that geekman's response is well worth looking into to. I have had absolutely no problem with running MSTS, or anything else for that matter, on XP. Many others have had the same experience.Just some thoughts.Lawrence

I agree lawrence,I dont have any problem running MSTS.Im running a GF4 ti4600 so cant compare as to video and a MSI kt4ultra -r motherboard. When I was buying my system parts I was going to buy the dragon but when they posted the system for me the board became unstable with the ram chips(2x512meg ddr2700)so I went with the other board instead. It was a good choice and now my new super system run flawless. Good luck fixing your problem steve.

WIN-XP SR1.The SR1 seem to have disappeared from the scene, not being mentioned anywhere in recent issues of the Computing Media and not included on Free Magazine Covers CDs any more.A recent report in the U.K.'s "Weekly Computing", I did not bother showing in the Forum remembering what some of the comments were on previous occasions, a number of problems with it are addmitted to by MICROSOFT.One of them is that Gamers in particular report sudden slowing down and crashes of their Games and other Software. Here it is again and perhaps some of you will take notice of what it says:
