Recently backed up my routes and uninstalled/reinstalled TS.
Reinstalled my add-on routes, and discovered that all the terrain had vanished and become white voids. Posted the problem and both Sniper and Bob Hahn kindly replied. Their answers were close enough to point me in the right direction.
When I backed up the routes, for some reason the *.raw files in the Tiles subfolder of each route never copied over. No *.raw files, no terrain. Just the Great White Void! (Every other file copied over, but not the *.raws! Go Figure)So make sure your *.raw files get backed up, or you can spend your time redownloading all your favorite routes, just like me.By the way, can anybody email me the TILES subfolder to the British NWTrains, and Tim Court's British East Coast Main Line?

Thanks

Using Win 98 SE copy utility:
Copied all add-on routes to a temp directory on my C drive.
And also formatted cd roms with Adaptec 5, and copied all add-on routes to the CDs.
In both cases the *.raw files never copied over.
For some reason, Win 98's copy utility did not recognize/copy/like (?)
those RAW files. But every other file copied nicely.

Probably has something to do with *.RAW is being used as RAW image-ISO files on CD-R/CD-RW's
Better Zip the whole Route first, saves space too.Greets Henk.

A much better method for copying or backing up ANYTHING is the standard Microsoft Backup, MSBackup.exe, that is included in Win98SE.It is very user friendly, and will generate either a highly compressed or uncompressed backup file. Also has an option to compare the original and the backup after the backup is completed. This does away with having to zip files before copy.
Fast too. Takes about 1 minute to backup a 300Mb route folder. With compression a 300Mb route folder squashes down to 150Mb.My CD's hold four of these compressed backup files and I have successfully used them to restore/install the route to both Win98 and WinMe machines. Of course we only use one of the backup files to do the install.IOW,if you burn the backup file to a CD it can be used by another user, in this case, running Windows ME, to install the route on his machine. No hassels at all.
Denny is my main beta tester running WinME and I just run the CD over to him and he runs a restore and the program correctly installs all the route files on his machine. When the NECv4 is completed this is probably the method I will use when I ship the beta CD to the testers.Back to pounding spikes.

RE: White Void Followup

For backing up routes etc wouldn't it be much easier to just burn the origional zip file on a cd and keep that?
Seems to be the easiest way. To me at least.

RE: White Void Followup

Well guys,
Thanks for the suggestions.
The reason I did it my (wrong) way was because I had made changes
to some of the tiles. Stuff like cleaning up floating track, buildings, etc., changing ground textures, etc. Just to suit my own personal tastes. (This is not meant as a criticism to the authors/creators. I cannot do what they do, and I will not criticise or complain about free work! Besides, its good practice for when I start building a route.)
Anyway...
In the future, my backup procedures will be different.
Thanks
BJ
