Hi,
After installing 4 different video cards in the last two weeks and having
two of them fry after only a few minutes I need to know something.
For those keeping score:
First I got a ATI Radon 9700 Pro, My PC wouldn't boot.Second was a Geforce 4600 TI, It lasted 4 days, on the 5th day it failed on
boot up, called tech support and was told to return it for another.Third was a second GF4 TI 4600, both were made by BFG tech. I installed this
card, Downloaded the latest drivers, rebooted, ran the MSTS troubleshooter,
rebooted and the card fried. Took it out put it in a second computer and it
did nothing, it was dead. After each of these burned out I re installed my old GF2 Ultra and it worked
fine.Today I picked up a GF4 4400 TI. I have it in here now and all seems OK.What I need to know is, What does the MSTS Trouble shooter exactly do? and
why do I need to run it?
Whenever I do it shows that it is "profiling" then a box comes up telling me
the best drivers are on top.
What do I do after that? There is nothing else listed after the top one. I
looked through both CD's and searched here for info on this but I didn't
find anything.
I can not have another video card failure or I swear I will become the next
chain saw killer. I've had enough of taking this thing apart.
Thanks,
Mike

RE: MSTS Troubleshooter?

Mike,I seem to be having a similar problem with my video card. I have just got done putting together a new system. Included with the new setup is a GeForce TI 4600. However, I did not run across the problem where my video card went "##### up". The problem that I have is that whenever I begin to start a train in motion, everything freezes up on me (video, sound, etc). Wtih this, I have no choice but to reboot the computer. I have over 500 MB of memory, a 1.67 GHZ processor and a highly respectable motherboard with all the lastest drivers installed. I don't know what is going on. I am running Win 2000 (Professional). Can somebody help me out. Is it Win 2K or DirectX causing the problem.John

RE: MSTS Troubleshooter?

might be something to do with the Win 2K. It has the annoying habit of allowing a monitor to only run at a refresh rate of 60hz, instead of what it might otherwise be capable of. Downloading a shareware patch will fix that problem. If you have all the latest drivers like you say(sound, video, etc), then you might have to try changing some of your bios setting for the video card. Could try changing the video setting to AGP 2X instead of the 4X. Might make things a little slower video wise, but could give you the stability you want. Also, in your bios setting, in the advanced chipset features, check to see what the graphics aperture size is set for. 64 is the default in newer boards, if it is set lower than that, try setting it to 64, if your board will allow it. If it is already at 64, you could try 128, again if your board will allow it. Will take a little testing here to see what combination your board and card are happiest with....

RE: MSTS Troubleshooter?

Doug,Win2k runs fine here so I don't think its a problem with w2k.
It might default to 60 hz but you can change it.
What shareware patch?
AGP 2 will do nothing as nothing can run at AGP4 yet.Derek

RE: MSTS Troubleshooter?

there are freeware or shareware patches available that will enable Win 2000 to run the monitor at a higher refresh rate. Microsoft, in their wisdom(??) has never bothered to correct this flaw. Even XP has this flaw, haven't heard whether it was corrected in their service pack release...

RE: MSTS Troubleshooter?

sorry to hear about all your fried cards. when you installed the cards did you go into your motherboard cmos and make the necesary changes there? Also, now you have to watch what the voltages are of the various components-newer video cards are 1.5 volts and older 2X cards were 3.3 volts, so have to be careful of motherboard and videocard voltage requirements. Maybe the voltage your motherboard was supplying was too much-check to see if your motherboard cmos, in the advanced chipset features, has an 'over voltage AGP' setting...anything more than 1.5 volts could have caused your problems. If you have an older motherboard bios, it might need to be updated to handle the new, big video cards...lots of possibles unfortunately.

RE: MSTS Troubleshooter?

Hi Derek, was talking about 2X and 4X video card. different voltages, at least as far as the 9700 Pro is concerned. AGP 2's will go into AGP 4 boards, which can toast the newer boards. The Gigabyte 8ihxp has a big sticker on it warning against using 2X video cards because of the higher voltage that they require (3.3) versus what this board supplies. Also this particular board has different settings for 'over AGP voltage'.

RE: MSTS Troubleshooter?

Hi Mike,The 9700 draws a *lot* of current so it appears that your power supply is too small or your motherboard cannot handle the current draw for the 9700.With the 4600's, you don't mention the brand? When changing video cards it is only necessary to run mprofile to let the DX system know what sort of card you have.Derek

RE: MSTS Troubleshooter?

Thanks Derek,
There is some issue between the 9700 and certian Asus motherboards where they won't boot. There is a whole list of em. I have a 400W power supply. Both the 4600's were made by BFG Tech. http://www.bfgtech.com/index.htmI used MSTS last night for the first time in 2 weeks and it ran OK, I didn't run the Troubleshooter yet. I was just wondering if it interacts with the video card in some way that might have caused the second card to fry. It went bad right after I ran the Troubleshotter. When I took it out of the machine (after maybe 20 min) it was pretty hot and I had not done anything to stress the card like play video's or games. I just wasn't sure if the troubleshooter had anything to do with it. Thanks again,
MDC

RE: MSTS Troubleshooter?

Hi Mike,The troubleshooter runs on every new install, so I don't see how it could damage anything. You just need to run 'mprofile'Derek
