Hi Guys,
I downloaded PO&N6 and unzipped it into a folder. When I tried to click on the icon to set the thing up, WindowsXP tells me it's not a valid Win32 applicaton. What's up? Am I doing something wrong here?
Thanks,
Michael

You checked the PO&N6 folder in the MSTS routes folder, and then ran the Bat.file to install didn't you?The bat file ran for me automatically, using XP,and everything was fine when started.I downloaded yesterday,so I doubt bad files are the cause.Good luck.

I don't think he even got to the BAT file. It sounds that the .exe within the zip was screwed up, and corupt files are usually a result on the users part, could me many reasons, that's why you didn't have a issue with itPO&N6 not a valid Win32 application? Help please – image 5

RE: PO&N6 not a valid Win32 application? Help please...

Could be you got a corrupted download, or possibly you don't have Winzip or whatever Windows XP's built-in thingie set up properly. I got 98SE, but I've heard WinXP comes with it's own unzipper.PONv6.zip should be 7,740kb, 7.55 megabytes, the PONv6.exe within should be 8,095,744 - packed size 7,894,911.PONv6.exe is a Winzip self extracting executable, so any version of Windows would recognize that as a valid Win32 app provided it's not corrupted or truncated.

SNIPER, I just installed the PONV6 into WIN-XP G:\, having told your EXE Installer to do so, NO PROBLEMS !Noticed that you are still tempting us to drive into the Lake coming out of Johnsburg ! Not for much longer ! Going to hack your Tracks at 50.23066/-108.37404, branching it to the left past the bridge into the Main Line and test it with my 4xBSNF-60 consist, if there is enough track ahead starting in the shed. If not, will create an Activity starting the Consist in the yard next to it.Might also do a "STARTING POINTS MAP" for your P.O.&.N.-6 same as I did for the N.&.J.C. yesterday, seeing that I use a lot !

RE: PO&N6 not a valid Win32 application? Help please...

Just to let everyone know, I got the problem solved. I don't understand exactly what was up. The file size was correct but testing with PKZip showed a corrupt file. I downloaded it again using my download manager (Flashget) and still got the same result. Finally, I just downloaded the file using the stock Windoze downloader and had no more problems. Thanks, for the great route!! I'm off to explore now. I recently upgraded from a celery 400 to a PentiumIV 2GHZ. I still only have 512k of RAM and a 32mb PCI card but I'm getting "decent" performance now. I can't wait to upgrade the video card!!

RE: PO&N6 not a valid Win32 application? Help please...

Yeah, I got DSL now, but back when I had a 56k dial-up I tried them gozilla download manager speeder-upper thingies, and they all made the downloads slower, never worked properly with the resume download thing, as near as I could tell they created more problems and didn't solve any.PKzip, hey? You're kind of dating yourself, I finally gave up PKZip and bought winzip a few years after the Win9x transition, cuz PKZip wouldn't zip/unzip long filenames with spaces in them properly. For some reason Winzip doesn't catch CRC Checksum errors the way PKZip did, unless the file is drastically corrupted, but thankfully corrupted zips are rare for me these days. Now that I stop to think about it, most of the corrupted zips I had in the past were after downloading something with gozilla.

RE: PO&N6 not a valid Win32 application? Help please...

With the dial up internet connection I have,a download manager which will resume a download is a neccesity. I've never had much luck with them except for this one. This is the first real problem I've ever had. I'd kill for DSL but you can't get it out here in the boonies. Maybe we will get cable someday. Right now the only option is satellite and I can't afford that. So PKZip dates me hunh?...lol.. Ahhh well, I've been fooling with computers since DOS and Windoze 3.1 and it's been what I've always used. I just wish I had the time and talent to design routes like you do. I hope to get into creating activities at least. Thanks again for the great route and for the help as well.

Sniper,I am having FUN hacking the Johnsburg patch.Any reason why you no longer show "Dynamic Track" as an option in the RE ? It's in the PON-5 !I can do it without them, but it's hard work !

RE: PO&N6 not a valid Win32 application? Help please...

Funny thing, the dynamic track has to have an entry in the ref file, none of the regular track sections do. With combstuff it was at the very bottom of the regular track section listing, Jim Steven gave it it's own listing. So where you find dynamic track in the object menu depends on what the listing in the ref file is, and I noticed the route riter created ref sticks it in with the track sections:Dyntrack (
FileName ( DYNTRACK )
Class ( "Track Sections" )
Align ( None )
Description ( "Dynamic track piece" )
)And that would show up at the very bottom of the list, since a1t,a2t,a3t,a4t all come before D.If you run the restuffPO&N6.bat, it will copy the original Portogden6.ref over the one created by Route Riter, and the listing there is;Dyntrack (
Class ( "Dynamic track" )
Filename ( "DYNTRACK" )
Align ( None )
Description ( "Dynamic track piece" )
)so that would show up by itself in it's own class listing. Moral of the story is, if you don't find dynamic track where it usually is, look around since ref files aren't neccessarily standardized from one route to the next. I had one Spanish route I downloaded last year where dynamic track showed up as "Clutter"!

RE: PO&N6 not a valid Win32 application? Help please...

Thanks Jim !!!I was going to put a Crossing into the new spur joining the Main Line to let the other dead-end track cross it back the Main Line as is did before, impossible to do without Dynamic Tracks, but it's not that important in this location. More important to get a long train back onto the Mainline coming through Johnsburg, heading towards a watery grave ! Am tempted to have a go at completing that bridege over the lake now ! All good practice !

RE: PO&N6 not a valid Win32 application? Help please...

If this is the only app you're getting the error with, then I'd suspect a corrupt download.
But, if you get the error when trying to run lots of windows apps, then a virus scan
might be in order. I don't recall the name of the virus, but about 6 months ago I
had an entire office that was getting the 'not a valid win32 app' message when trying
to launch programs via shortcut icons. In their case the virus swooped in and modified
the program name in the shortcuts to point to an app it had planted in the windows
folder named wslu32.exe. For what ever reason, that program wouldn't run (they
just don't make viri like they uesd to) and that's what was popping up the error.
McAffee 'cleaned' the virus and deleted the nasty program, but all the shortcuts had
to be fixed by hand to point back to the original apps. Not sure what the virus was
intended to do if the planted app would have run, but popping that program into a
debugger revealed a bunch of interrupt 13 calls, apparently doing some sort of
system level hard disk read/writes.

RE: PO&N6 not a valid Win32 application? Help please...

I have not had a problem with it I always run the .bat file after just to make sure I drill it through XP that I want the route installed. I have the beta version too. It's a very good route. Sounds like the file might be corrupt you might want to redownload it again and then go into the folder and double click on the installme.bat file or whatever it's called. Oh yeah Ottodad we got a nasty storm going on here want to snowboard? lol
