I'm having a heck of time remembering what's what when I go to make a consist and/or activity and trying to find certain cars....if I changed the name in the eng or wag file so it would be more descriptive would I mess anything up - I don't think it has to be the same file folder as the name - as most of the time I name those the same as the eng or wag file. Thanks in advance for any thoughts/help on this subject. Michael

>would be more descriptive would I mess anything up . . .Assuming you mean the name statement, no. That is the one thing you can change without messing anything up. Changing either the foldr name or 'wag file name is risky business, especially if the car has already been entered into consists. Although the name filed is what is displayed by the consist editor, it is not used in the consist file when a consist is built, and changing it later will have no effect of existing consists.>I don't
>think it has to be the same file folder as the name . . .Correct. It is the "human interface" field and can be changed without disturbing anything else in MSTS.When changing the name field, don't forget the syntax. If you leave out a quote or paren it can do funny things depending on where in the .wag file it is located. Also, much of the rolling stock I have downloaded came without a name line in the .wag. If you have one of these, a name line can be added. I generally put it just before the Type line and indent it the same amount.Brad "hope this helps" Meyer

RE: File Name Question

At work (I run a small IS dept) I'm known to some as "dink" because I'm always telling people "Dink with it awhile -- even if you don't figure it out, you will learn something interesting and useful in the process. You cannot damage the PC from the keyboard. It won't strip a clutch or throw a rod no matter what keys you press. You are backed up every night. If you are saving early and saving often, the worst that can happen is that you lose half an hour while I resetup your box and the last two or three miniutes of whatever you were doing. Go dink with it."

RE: File Name Question

Add a name line to the wag file. here is an example from the ATSF coal car full Sound ( "GenFreightWag1.sms" )
Name ( "ATSF coalfull 179655" )
)I have added this to all my rolling stock. It make is easier to remember out what is what.

RE: File Name Question

Thanks Kevin - this is what I'm looking for...I starting naming some of my rolling stock - now to decide - do I list roadname first or model (i.e., SD40-2 CSX 8077 or Box 50' CSX 197540)....sometimes I just want all of one type (i.e., SD40-2 consist) or an all PS2 Hopper consist, etc. Hopefully this will make it easier....many thanks!!!! RE: File Name Question

I prefer to use the RR first, that keeps the pull down list in Conbuilder organized the way I like it. Consist editor in AE is another critter all together. This is a matter of personal preference, not dogma.Kevin Arceneaux

RE: File Name Question

>Consist editor
>in AE is another critter all together. Too damn true. I noticed tonight, while building consists for an activity, the the consist editor changed the display order of the rolling stock after almost every new consist was entered, moving the most recently selected cars to the top of the list. I wish I knew what the heck its sorting method is.Brad Meyer
