CFS3 installs DX 8.2 automatically. Perhaps everyone has read how it has increased framreates in FS2002 for most everybody? Well, I just checked very carefully before and after adding DX 8.2, and at the same exact spot (EDIT: I mean in MSTS), and fps has increased from 7 to 9.(DX 8.2 release version, not beta, is also available without CFS3, find link by Simon Evans in flightsim.com fs2002 forum).Anyway, if anyone is going to add CFS3 or DX 8.2 why not first check framerates before and after at one exact spot, prove whether 8.2 is really increasing framerates in MSTS ? YES!! Highly recommended. I got a 5 fps improvement out of it (from 33 to 38) on the CSX Funnel route. My setup:
Dual Athlon 1200 MP
512MB DDRAM
Windows 2000 SP3
Asus GEforce 3 Ti500 To get this, go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads and do a search on Product Name "Direct X" for your operating system. The file you want is called "Direct Play 8.2". It's a 27MB download. It's apparently not really DirectX 8.2, but some interim release of 8.1b with some 8.2 components.

Downloading... Some hours needed, well, I'll just let it go...Your previous DirextX release was 8.1b, wasn't it? (mine is 8.1b)
Why now they call it DirectPlay instead of DirectX? There isn't Italian version yet, Italian Windows will remain 8.1b for now... I'm even happier mine is English! Umberto

>Why now they call it DirectPlay instead of DirectX? DirectPlay is just part of the DirectX package. Since it has mostly to do with online multiplayer games, I wonder what would cause framerate increases for MSTS?

RE: DX 8.2 and MSTS framerates

Very Interesting, Bill !The last I read about DX was that Microsoft was to release DirectX-9 shortly ?So where did DX 8.2 come from ? Might even do my SFR (Super Frame Rates ) WIN XP machine some good ?If it is an Official MS Release it should be on FREE CDs soon you get with Computer Mags ?

RE: DX 8.2 and MSTS framerates

I did the before and after comparison using the Ohio River route running the "OR&W Division Local - Steam" activity. Looking forward toward railyard Before=18 After=19
Looking forward after passing yard Before=25 After=25
Looking backwards toward yard Before=16 After=17For all practical purposes this is no difference in frame rates on my system. (P4 2.0GHz, Geforce 4 4400).I believe that at some point (high end graphics cards) MSTS, like many other simulations, becomes CPU speed limited not graphics limited, so I really wasn't expecting a significant frame rate improvement.

Is it just me? Or does it say the download time for a 28.8k is 2,237 hours? ROFL!

RE: DX 8.2 and MSTS framerates

Per Microsofts Download Page:"You should only consider installing this release if you have an online gaming problem that has been identified as being fixed with DirectX 8.2"I'll stay with DirectX 8.1b and wait for DirectX 9.0 Thanks guys for the info. Thanks,
Rich S.

Transcon - Its not just you. RivaStation picked it up from MS and didn't bother to question the 2237 hours business. I sent the item to PC Magazine Backspace dept - the page inside the back cover, which is often about the only thing I really like about the mag. dgauci - 27 Megs in 5 mintes? What took you so long? Cable ISP is faster than that. Bing

For those with XP and systems that can backtrack, there should be no problem trying it out. If it causes problems, just go back to previous setup.David

I think CajunRon may have had something above. Any changes may be dependent on the speed of the system in the first place. I've tried it for a couple of hours and my lowly PIII 800 is now roughly 5 fps faster everywhere I've been and a considerable improvement in fluidity. It's almost like a different game.

RE: DX 8.2 and MSTS framerates

IMO, when one is looking at upgrade, the thing to do is to view the entire PC as a data pipe. Figure out where the flow restriction is occuring, and address that part of the system. Your point about the CPU being limiting is valid in your case. On another system it could be a RAM issue (If I try to put too much through TSTools in one pass and it goes to swapfile to increase memory its like someone threw out an anchor). If you have a disk intensive application and a slow hard drive, nothing but a faster one will really fix the problem. Lots of people tend to jump on one thing or another without really trying to find out where the bottleneck actually is.Brad Meyer

Well not quite Troub....
Its true that your neighbors' (note plural and make that a large plural) usage has a bearing on your throughput. However, of more importance is how many customers your cable provider puts on a "node" and what he caps D/L speed at... That combination can be a killer if too many and a low speed.... However DSL customers can experience the same problem depending on the size of the pipe from the C/O to the Internet Portal/Peer Point/Gateway and the load on the muxes installed in the C/O.... And number of hops to the internet and route through the "cloud"....
It all boils down to "Size matters" when it comes to throughput...Chuck Schneider
