Hi folksWondered if anyone has had the same problem, or knows how to cure the loss of the Functions keys in MSTS?I've just upgraded(?) to XP, and it's been largely ok at running stuff. My first problem came when I noticed I couldn't set my reso to the usual - it always reverted back to the default 640x480 when I started up MSTS. I tried to launch with the Launcher to check if the sim was seeing my grphics card, but that doesn't seem to work either. So I decided to use the Program Compatibility Wizard. The sim still works, but the Launcher's still kaput as before, and now the F keys don't work either. I realise I could re-install, but I'd sooner not if some kind soul knows how to cure all this.Overall I'm pretty pleased with XP, so I'd like to keep it.I'd really appreciate any help.
Cheers
Ken

From all I've heard and read about XP, you couldn't pay me to use it. I use WIN98SE and am very happy with it. If I ever decide to upgrade, it will be to WIN2K. XP looks pretty on the screen but too many things are quirky with it. Also, the licensing policy draws a vacuum! If I were you, I would go back to what you were previously using--unless it was WIN98ME which is also garbage IMHO!Cal Rasmussen

RE: I've lost my Functions....!!!

Watch it Cal, there is a ferocious PRO WIN XP Fraternity out there ! I have been converted to it but only as far as using it for SIMS is concerned, improving Frame Rates by 400% and over in MSTS. "CONVERTING / UPGRADING" to WIN XP is not a good idea, a CLEAN NEW INSTALL is !Re-Installing MSTS does not mean that you are going to lose what you got. Simply DELETE the current TRAIN.EXE and LAUNCHER.EXE and INSTALL MSTS again. Make sure with RUN DXDIAG that your installed DirectX is 8.1 ! If not, Download it from Microsoft and Install.Get Updated for WIN XP Drivers for your Graphics Card, etc, and after having re-installed MSTS use it's "Trouble Shooter" to "Change Video Driver".

Thanks for the advice fellas. I want to stick with XP as, despite a few glitches, I've been pretty pleased with it - and baring in mind I was using ME before I reckon it's an improvement overall.I'll got for the re-install and see what happens! Thanks again for the feedback.Cheers

Ken, when/if you ever find out what happened with the loss of the function keys in TS, please let me/us know. I've had a half-dozen complaints from users of XP that have complained about losing their function keys, which seemed to coincide with installing my route. They almost always have sent a note back saying everything is fine and running even better, but not one has ever told me what the solution is so I could possibly save someone else some time. Much appreciated in advance if you can help.

RE: I've lost my Functions....!!!

Sound advice from Otto,a clean install of XP is the best route, then a reinstall of MSTS to finish it off.I keep backups of Route,Con,trainset folders, and Route Control trainstation folder on CD's,or elsewhere on my HDD.
In the event of a reinstall,I copy paste back in the relevant route folders, one at a time, run route control, and selectively put back the required con,and trainset items. It's amazing how quickly this can be done, and is well worth the effort.

I'd be pleased to. At the mo I'm holding fire as Kelley has said he's re-installed loads of times and is still having problems. If it's a graphics card driver problem I'm a bit bothered as I can't seem to find an earlier XP certificated driver for an Nvidia GForce4 Ti4200. I have an Asus version, and although the Liveupdate says there's an update to have, the link doesn't work properly, and there's still no saying that XP will recognise it as certificated. The Detonator 4 drivers (d/loaded last night) say they are for XP, but XP doesn't approve of them!I'll keep you informed!! BTW, which route did you create? I've not been too involved with MSTS on the net for a while now.Cheers
KenDoh!! Just saw your link to your site. Need new batteries for my eyes I reckon. Your site/route looks great. I'll do a bit more exploring

Robert,I have had some problems after installing WXP. I am not for sure if it is a WXP or MSTS Problem. I lost use of the F9 Key and had to re-install MSTS to get it fixed. Also whenever I use the F2 or Escape Key MSTS sometimes goes to the send to Microsoft Screen. At least in WXP I can send the info to Microsoft with out locking up the computer. No I didn't do a Clean install of WXP as I have a Vaio and Sony has a lot of drivers that are different. I may try a clean install sometime in the future when I get brave enough and spend the money for the WXP Program.Dave Horton

RE: I've lost my Functions....!!!

You don't need a certified driver for XP addon cards.,you just hit "install anyway",or the equivalent in the install dialogue box. Some manufacturers of graphics\modems cards, mention this in their readme's.The drivers will probably be awaiting certification anyway by Microsoft. My graphics card was similar originally, even to the point of "Windows Update" informing me,a month or so later,of "New drivers to download",and guess what?they were the same version drivers, but now certified. The manufacturers usually have the most reliable and latest drivers available for XP,they've got a reputation to keep,so don't worry about the "official" Msoft certification too much.

RE: I've lost my Functions....!!!

Yes, well I tend to install 'em anyway, like you said. Trouble is, when you get a barrowfull of problems you like to eliminate anything that may cause them.Anyway, I've just done a re-install of MSTS. The Launcher is now behaving, and the sim will remember my settings, but a) I've lost practically all of my consists (not really that bothered there), but b) the sim still crashes when I try to do a run. So, looks like a complete re-install of everything regarding routes etc.Maybe it's time for a new hobby! No, I'll have a beer first then think again Cheers

Robert,
I would normally agree with you that it may be the video driver. However I do have the latest for my VisionTek Geforce 3. I also tried going back to previous drivers but the results were the same. Like you say who knows. At least everytime it happens I can send the fault to Microsoft which I could not do under Win 98SE or ME.Dave Horton

I have Win XP on my new pc and it works fine, but that is probably because it was factory installed.

RE: I've lost my Functions....!!!

There's no difference between "factory installed" and "self installed" as far as XP is concerned,as it's exactly the same process, and program. Some manufacturers do "tailor" XP,driverwise for their own volume hardware, but that's a minor point. To install XP properly, you really need a clean HDD.On the occasions that I have done that,I use the HDD manufacturers software to wipe my HDD,and repartition it FAT 32.I've now got an empty "box".If you're building anew, your box it's MT anyway. When installing XP,it repartitions to NTFS,and installs itself.
After installing the drivers for,Motherboard,Graphics,Sound,Modem, and configuring the BIOS for my particular requirements,I'm ready for MSTS.As I build my own machines, this is no great chore, and is fun to see your creation get a life of its own,not to mention the fact that you've saved quite a few dollars in the process.
