The discussion has taken an odd turn, so I am starting a new post. I know that I am new here, and don't have much influence (for lack of a better word) but the idea of multiple players and many trains running and working together hit me as I was studing some boaring technical stuff. Needless to say, I could not get back to my work, and have been thinking about the idea ever since. Back to my original question: Would there be enough interest in such a site, and if there were, who would build it? (I am sure, if you built it, they would come). Thanks,Matt

RE: On-line train simming? Is there enough interest ou

Train Sim, much like real world railroading is 90% doing something by yourself. I don't see much difference between the having a computer running the other train that passes me on a sideing every half hour or so, or a human being. It doesn't matter that the car I'm picking up was just delivered by someone across the world or was placed there by the PC. The signals drive the trains, which are hopefully confined to a track, unlike flight sim where two people can dogfight. So while I think making such a sim would be very easy, I don't think I would be much interested in playing it on line. Nothing much is gained in the experience. Might give you someone to be mad at if you have to sit in a siding waiting for a pass by someone who can't get his train up the grade. Just doesn't do anything for me.

I just get kinda board driving my trains and not passing any other traffic. I just thought it would be fun to work with other people, all playing the same game, with a common intreast. If you want to play solo, you would just stay off the game server. Just my thoughts.

What might be more realistic is to have someone 1000 miles away be the dispatcher
for all the trains. That way you could spend the last 2 hours of your run being the
3rd train back stacked on a siding waiting (patiently?) for your turn to drag your
train into the yard so you can tie it down and go grab some food.

mudkow,I know exactly what you mean. I found the 'gameplay' in MSTS quite boring (i.e. lonely), even with the activities. I am trying to make 'Yard Duty' a multi-player railroad game with a common interest. I know I posted in the other thread, but I would be interested in what you think of my game, since it was the same dream that you are having that inspired me to make it. Maybe it still is a dream... Thanks.
