RE: Can anyone tell me if there is a route...

The Port Ogden is a fantastic route, but I don't run it for the grades. There are a few, including a mean 4% grade, but it is short grade. If you really want a challange, try Robert Reedys ADFRR. 50 miles of mountain grades, plus 2 coal pits. Leave Valley Mining, and head for the main line at Klosens Ridge, and then try and bring 100 loaded coal hoppers down the pass tpwards Bailey. With full dynamics and full braking, I still can't do it. Came close last week, but lost it near the bottom. The ADFRR has a 180 mile long mainline, with several branches bringing total trackage to almost 300 miles. The 3 US/Canadian payware routes, Cajon, Kicking Horse Pass, and Sandpatch also are good for loaded coal train training. Try the ADFRR, thouhg, it is free and more of a challange IMO.ChrisIt's not a game, it's a way of life.

The "Blue Ridge Route" which is a rendering of the old Clinchfield RR which was a mountain coal road!

Rich Garber's Ohio Rails (Build 10 is at Avsim) is good for the coal trains. ITs not a coal train, but I stalled out when I started from Cambridge with two TA Mountains and about 20 of Teemu's new heavyweights. I think the engines are a bit weak, though. It has some good grades.I need to get ADFRR......Bradley Linda

RE: Can anyone tell me if there is a route...

If I could have one and only one route for MSTS, It would be Robert Reedy's ADFRR eoute. This route has everything from mountains, desert, large urban areas (plenty of yards and sidings for switching), expansive plains and flat running through a variety of terrain, small towns, industrial areas, etc... etc... etc...All of this with meticulous attention to detail and best of all frame rates with 100 car trains that I can live with.AND it is free, if you have problems, Robert always goes the extra mile to get you up and running.IMHO the quality and attention to detail of this route puts it right up there with many of the payware routes out there.

Though coal is not the premise of this route; Hoodoo Pass has mining (Silver & Platinum) and mountain grades also. Designed for 60-70's era, it also has some passenger stuff as well. The route is scheduled to be released on the 11th of November.Kip

Hi Kip,I don't remember seeing any coal tipples on the Hoodoo screen shots. Will you be including some with the release, or are any planned for the future?Cheers!

RE: Can anyone tell me if there is a route...

No tipples...yet. However I have other objects that serve as well. I have added considerably to the mines (Cascade #2 "Cascadia" and Cascade #1 "Sprague"). There's alot more objects in Beta 1.5 than 1.0. Therer's much to do yet I'm afraid. I have to juggle between 3DTS and Hoodoo Pass work with 3DTS being the priority, so I only can dedicate to Hoodoo Pass a short time everyday. But its' getting there.Kip

Sniper, I guess you know you cost me about 2 weeks worth of work on my route. It took the first week to look in the RE and try to figure out how you had everything sealed underground to make the mine .. and another week of trying and re-trying and finally realizing this was going to be an open pit mine. You have my admiration in making it all work, especially as early in TS as it was. You obviously have a classic all the way around. And the PRRR - a short story. I decided to break away from the testing for awhile and started up towards Hoodoo Pass with 3 AC6000's and a long string of coal hoppers. As I progressed along, this was one of the few times I've used 100% (notch8) and was still sweating whether I was going to make it or not. I would have had a few choice words for the trainmaster, but I guess I would have been talking about myself. I did make it, but it was a most memorable trip!

RE: Can anyone tell me if there is a route...

Yup...it can be a challenge alright. I've stalled a couple of times myself; especially going south from Wolf Valley. A little steeper from that direction. That's why I equipped my caboose with rockets.. Kip

RE: Can anyone tell me if there is a route...

Yeah, I'm still trying to recreate the flavor of the original Marias where you had to constantly juggle throttle & brakes to manage the slack and keep from stalling out one minute and running away the next, still not there yet.
Robert, we scratched our heads over that thing for quite a while, why it works on some routes and not on others. Bill Burnett said he didn't have the opaque-from-underneath water at first, then suddenly one day he did, and I screwed around extracting routes in the Chicago area to try to get the effect working for Chris Cyko's Chicago EL route a long time back, never did succeed. http://www.train-sim.com/cgi/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=show_thread&om=976&forum=DCForumID6&archive=yesI eventually figured out you could repaint waterbot.ace coal black (after TGAtool2 came out) without affecting how the water looks topside, but what exactly makes it work sometimes and not work other times is something we never did puzzle out.
