I have just upgraded to Windows 2000 Pro and love it. Unfortunately, my MS Train Simulator will NOT run under 2000. When I double click the desktop icon or go to the start menu, the screen turns black like Train Sim is starting, then reverts back to my desktop. Anyone have any suggestions? I did remove Train Sim and reinstall it when I upgraded.

RE: Windows 2000 problems

I believe that some folks here run MSTS on W2000 Pro with no problems. You mentioned that you upgraded to W2000 Pro.. was this an upgrade from Win NT4 or a clean install of Win 2000 Pro?? If you upgraded from Win NT4 this may be the problem that you are encountering.Perhaps somebody who is more knowledgable than me can expand further on this.

RE: Windows 2000 problems

A clean install would have been better. When up just upgrade from a previous version you end up with all knids of junk.Kevin Arceneaux

RE: Windows 2000 problems

Sometimes problems arise when you upgrade to a more robust OS such as W2000 Pro. I have always done a clean install. Again, maybe somebody on this forum has successfully upgraded from W98SE to W2K Pro and been able to run MSTS. I did a clean install of WXP Pro when I upgraded my system.

RE: Windows 2000 problems

Harry, Who built your motherboard?I built a brand new MSTS computer last Christmas just for running trains. I selected Win 2000 Pro because there was no way I was going to use ME, and XP wasn't old enough for me to trust. To get to the point, I had a devil of a time getting things to run. MSTS would do exactly what you see on your machine and I couldn't for the life of me figure out what was wrong. I finally stripped the drive clean again and loaded up a very basic configuration. No other applications, not even my sound card drivers. Then I loaded Train Sim and when it worked, I went out and bought Norton Ghost.I ghosted the system as it stood, so I'd have a base to reload when I messed up, and then started installing my other applications and drivers, one at a time - ghosting my system after every couple installs. This way I finally found my problem. I have a SOYO motherboard and one of the utilities that came with it was a monitor that sits in the system tray and monitors board voltages and CPU temperature. Somehow, this utility was screwing Train Sim up. Things worked fine until I installed this - and even uninstalling it after didn't clear things up.I don't know if this will help you or not, but I worked for nearly two months troubleshooting my system. I'm glad I did, because it's working flawlessly and I'm in hog heaven.Larry

RE: Windows 2000 problems

Larry...That is real interesting. I was running a utility that came with My mobo (INTEL D850GB) that monitored temperatures at various points and system voltages. When I installed MSTS this utility was somehow corrupted and and two thirds of the displays contained garbage. One has priorities... needless to say the INTEL Utility was promptly un-installed.I run WXP Pro

RE: Windows 2000 problems

I'm on W2K Pro, I think I remember having a similiar problem. Try re- installing the train sim patch. Also if that doesn't work I think I had to start up the Sim trouble shooter & run the update video card & or check the video card box. One of those did work for me, sorry it was awile ago.Hope that helps, Rick.

RE: Windows 2000 problems

LAST EDITED ON Oct-30-02 AT 12:55 PM (EST)

I use Train Simulator on Windows 2000 without any kind of problem. I installed clean, though, then installed the right video adapter driver (ATI Radeon driver isn't there on Win 2000 CDs, so still 640x480 before driver installation). If you have upgraded from Windows 98, check in particular that your display driver is updated. Often, on Windows CDs you don't have the very last version of accelerated video card drivers; you have a base, maybe old, working version for ordinary tasks, but it may be definitely not working for running demanding 3D games like Train Sim. You may need to download and install the latest video card driver. The fact that nothing is displayed matches with that. Maybe you have still even old Win98 driver inatalled, which can still cope with ordinary tasks, but not with specific 3D activity.Hope that solves your problem.Umberto

RE: Windows 2000 problems

The same thing happened to me a couple of nights ago. I had just been using some pretty heavy duty audio app's, and then decided to run MSTS. It started firing up, and then all of a sudden the screen collapsed back into the task bar. I said 'Oh no you didn't!' and hit the task bar icon, and the screen came back up and resumed it's loading, and MSTS ran fairly fine. So I suspect myself of having caused my CPU (P3 950) to really work up a froth with my skunkwork beta testing beforehand, and then firing MSTS - my CPU just said 'oh give me a break!' Try clicking on the icon again if your screen collapses when firing up, and see if that'll discipline your CPU? And/or, if doing alot of work, or running another intense video game before running MSTS, best advice is to just reboot PC and fire up MSTS. Good luck.

RE: Windows 2000 problems

Just to chime in on this one ...
I had a similiar problem that ended up being related to the NTFS file system format. Since I've run into a couple other problems with NTFS and older games, I eventually rebuild my machine with W2K and FAT32.
Haven't had a problem since.
I also upgrade to 1GB of RAM about that time too, but I'm sure there was a problem with NTFS vs FAT32.
Of course, if this is the case, check out uncle Bill's site and see if there are a couple patches for this, otherwise you might be SOL since there is no undo for NTFS.

RE: Windows 2000 problems

FWIW... I run WXP PRO with the NTFS and have never had any problems running MSTS. I even have MSTS in its own 20GB partition which is mapped to the Microsoft Games Folder which is on my C drive, so all my add-on installations are default.

RE: Windows 2000 problems

Harry,
Had the same prob when I got an new used comp with Win2kpro. After fiddling for a while took it to the shop and they put in the latest Window-updates and now it runs fine.
