RE: WINDOWS XP - Service Release 1 Warning

::sigh::Not again. This has been hashed and rehashed. Please think of something here. You thought that Windows XP was the devil incarnate....now, you think it is pretty good, after listening to people here instead of your "sources."Now are we going to start all over again with SP1?Lawrence

RE: WINDOWS XP - Service Release 1 Warning

I loaded it when it first came out Otto, and there have been no problems at all. I have had xp for about 9 months, and never had a crash, unless it has been my fault! (twice), and then I just restore to the previous days backup, and I am back to normal.David

RE: WINDOWS XP - Service Release 1 Warning

I installed this SP1 when it first came out, and my son has installed it on his PC.There was no difference whatsoever in the PCs running speed, I check with 3D Mark 2001se every time I make a change to my system. However one problem did arise with my Route-Riter program in that one of the .dll files included in the distribution .zip file, msvcrt.dll was upgraded by MS in the SP1 package. The latest version of msvcrt.dll works fine under Windows XP, but if installed on a Windows 98 machine causes both Norton and ZoneAlarm to fail. Luckily I discovered this after my .zip had been posted for only one day on my home site, and not uploaded here I have changed the RR so that this file is no longer needed, however it is a bit of a worry that MS have distributed an XP specific .dll with the same name as the one which was earlier used for Windows 98.

RE: WINDOWS XP - Service Release 1 Warning

I must agree with the majority on this one.I can't tell the difference after the service pack was installed.I would assume it's the same old story, that the suppliers of "off the peg" computers, being the OEM supplier are responsible for XP support, not Microsoft. Thus they have a ready made excuse not to provide such,by claiming the service pack is detrimental to their products.
Nothing to do with their products being produced to enhance their profits, rather than to provide a stable operating platform for system enhancements,I suppose. Users of the "retail" XP operating system continue to benefit from Microsoft support for the SP1 package.

RE: WINDOWS XP - Service Release 1 Warning

Hey Otto, don't be so sensitive! LOL. It pays to be hard skinned round here, especially with some of the sarcastic shite spouted by a few of this illustrious fraternity. Some of our US cousins tend to be a bit sensitive about critisism, but that is their problem. There are many people who never post on here, but still read the posts and advice, and I am still sending Alco PA and PBs out twice a week to people who want them! People may have problems with the service 1 pack, depending on their setup, so the advice is still valid.Personally, I am more interested in the person who keeps sending me Kles viruses twice a day. He could at least try something newer. My double firewall gets them even before Norton has a chance. In the end it aint brain surgury!David

RE: WINDOWS XP - Service Release 1 Warning

OTTODAD...It really surprised me to learn that you have installed WXP on your new computer... a couple weeks ago you treated it like the plague. With all of your systems knowledge and experience one would think you would opt for W98,if you are only use it for games... I cannot afford the luxury of a system for games and another for my business. I am doubly surprised that you did not install W98 on your new system... It has much less overhead and requires substantially less resources... so one would be led to think that games/simulations would run more efficiently in a W98 environment.I personally have WXP Pro with SP1 and love it... best from Microsoft yet!!!!

RE: WINDOWS XP - Service Release 1 Warning

BRIANMy Main machine is a WIN 98SE, but despite changing MoBo and getting a TI-4600 I still got nowhere near the performance from MSTS WIN XP users quoted in my NEC Frame Rates Test Thread, remember ?So I got myself this new WIN XP machine with 1Gb of DDR RAM and another TI-4600, Re-Installed it to strip out everything I don't need for SIMS, Internet, Printer Support, etc. and was amazed to get an up to 500% overall improvement in MSTS and 50% in FS2002.Not going to Install anything other than SIMs on that machine and being totally isolated, it should remain being STABLE and PERFECT.What the rest of the world uses WIN XP for including the SR.1, of no use to me anyway other than USB-2 support I can do without, is none of my concern. But I do like to tip-off my friends if I hear or read something I think they should know about, just in case, apparently not being appreciated !Like I said before, Publications do not make up reports like that without risking to get sued by MS !

OttodadI suggest you have a look at http://www.woodyswatch.com/sitemap.asp which is one of the best sites I know for most things Microsoft.I would also suggest you sign up for the newslatters that are issued usually on a weekly basis. This guy has written loads of books about MS products.Last suggestion - sign up for Woodys Lounge at http://www.woodyswatch.com/sitemap.asp more knowledgeable people there than you can shake a stick at.Bill

RE: WINDOWS XP - Service Release 1 Warning

Thanks for the INFO, Bill, but as my interest in WIN XP is limited to running SIMS only, do you think there is something there I should know about ?
