I was cruising along, checking out a new activity on my route, when I came across these strange sights.
I don't know how it happened, but it appears to be a .tga got crossed up with some texture.
Anyone got any ideas what happened? Here's a strange sight! – image 2Here's a strange sight! – image 3Here's a strange sight! – image 4Here's one a little different. RE: Here's a strange sight!

Nice textures. I was so amazed I forgot to take a screenshot, but I have just had my A1tpnt10dlft transformed into a British class 37 diesel. The train I was driving passed through the body of the 37 but the 3rd car along derailed and my coupling broke. Perhaps that is the problem with this darned point, it thinks it is an engine.

RE: Here's a strange sight!

Hawk,I see you have installed car spawners. Are you still installing track or roads?
If you are, you are headed for a doomed route.Installing ANY track or road objects before ALL track and roads are complete will trash the route. Yours is one of many whose route ended in failure for not heeding this advice.Your terrtex files are incorrect. Go into the RE and check in the Terrain Select window, click on 'Insert', then scroll through all your texture files to see which ones are trashed. Note the filenames and then use windows explorer to correct them.

Just remember NEVER to mix installing track and roads with track objects. Don't get tempted to place these things "just to see what they look like." It's a route killer. Good luck.

RE: Here's a strange sight!

Thanks for your reply, Vince.
I am aware of the potential problems with adding car spawners, signals and such, to early, but I couldn't resist the temptation.
Actually, I'm very careful about what and where I build. I don't always have car spawners running. I just throw them in every once in a while to get the effect.
After a little more research (and a light bulb flashing on in my head), I'm beginning to believe the problem is not in the Sim, but in my system.
I've run that area several times, from different starting points, and everything is normal.
I've had occasion, while working in RE, when the RE screen turns a bright yellow. I can still see vague outlines of the track and mountains, but that's it.
As for now, I think I'll grab a pick-axe and go digging into my video settings and see what I can un-earth.

Hmm..I heard that while GeForce4's are all well and good, the 'MX-' line got a bad review...Try running the 'TI-' GeForce and see if there's any improvement Here's a strange sight! – image 9

It appears that some of your terrain .ace file have gotten overwritten with different files of the same name. If possible, try to determine what the rogue textures are and then restore your terrtex folder from a backup.Cal Rasmussen

RE: Here's a strange sight!

While we're on 'strange sights' and things, I had a weird thing just last night. I've been tweeking Marias Pass pretty heavily with buildings and trees and spawners - and as Vince points out, I too have learned the errors of my ways. However, at the road outside Columbia Falls heavy industry wye, I had placed ATSFDudes great Waffle House all nice and neat at the roadT intersection, and saved it. The other night I'm driving by, and some great wind or something has literally pushed it over the roadway? Anyone else ever experienced 'moved' buildings and such?

Well, I looked over some other screenshots I took of the phantom texture and it looks like it only affected one texture, the default "US2HalfForest-Snow.ace".
All 3 phantom textures appeared where it should have been the noted texture.
I did a system search for that file and found nothing out of the ordinary.
I loaded RE and looked at the "Texture Select" window and it looks fine in there, too.
Like I said, it only happened that one time and hasn't happened since.
I'm still leaning towards my system as the vandal, as opposed to something in the sim (check my previous post about the yellow screen in RE).
Thanks for the points to ponder, Cal.
Vince, your comments about car spawners and signals and such has not fallen on deaf ears and all car spawners have been deleted until track work is complete. Thanks. However, I really don't think that's the issue here, but it's too early to eliminate any possibility.
Thanks all for the assitance.
BTW! CNFav-I've had bridges move a little bit occasionally, but not buildings.
This sim never ceases to amaze me.
HawkEdit 1: By looking at the first 3 shots I posted, can anyone pinpoint what piece of rolling stock would use that texture? It might help me get a little closer to the problem.
Strange as it sounds, I wish it would happen again. I'd take a little more time to study the situation. It's the "Orange Blossom Special" bringing my baby home.

That looks like a piece of construction equipment. Do you have any bulldozers, loaders or other construction equipment in your route?Cal Rasmussen

Bingo
I think you got it, Cal. After reading your post, I went back to the affected area and here's what I found; What I think might be the culprit. Here's a strange sight! – image 12The alleged culprit, seen near the affected area. Here's a strange sight! – image 13Remember me mentioning the yellow screen in RE? Welp, here's a shot of that. Here's a strange sight! – image 14Sure looks more and more to me like a video issue.
??????????

Thanks Cal. I couldn't have found it without you. Now I need to look into the white area. Maybe the sim just wanted more snow in those tiles.
I love this sim more each day. It just keeps surprising you.

Hawk, I had a strange one something like this tonight for the first time on my route. Was driving along and all of a sudden one quarter of the screen is solid brown. The quarter would shift around from side to side, up and down, disappear then come back, depending on how I moved the cam. This happened everytime, but only when I got around one dark brown boxcar. After toying with this for awhile .. it dawned on me. In my case (I'm running 1024x768x16bit in TS), I realized I had changed my desktop resolution earlier to 32bit and had forgotten to chang it back. I went back into TS and tried to duplicate the 'brownouts', but no such luck. I think this was the problem in my case. The TS rez didn't equal the Desktop Rez. Just a thought.

RE: Here's a strange sight!

Hey RobertI just checked your suggestion and sure enough, they were different.
I set them equal (1280 x 1024 x 32). Now I wait and see if it happens again.
Thanks,
