RE: What I want for Christmas!

I have been using PIEngineering's Michael Hetherington's USB X-KEYS Programmable Keypads for over 2 years now and can vouch for their WORKMANSHIP and SUPPORT.I think it was me who gave him the Idea for the RAILDRIVER after he saw what I did with his Keypads. After he got MSTS last Christmas and got hooked like the rest of us ex-Railway Modellers and Trains Fans, he must have started thinking !!! Him playing with it himself will make sure that it is UP TO THE JOB ! Can I please EMPHASIZE the "playing with it himself" to make sure you read that sentence correctly !

RE: What I want for Christmas!

> I have been using PIEngineering's Michael Hetherington's USB
> X-KEYS Programmable Keypads for over 2 years nowHi there Ottodad,Perhaps you could answer a question for me, since you've worked with X-Keys... I have been thinking about building my own control/brake stand for MSTS almost since I first got it, so I could have more realistic controls. What's stopped me though is the aparent lack of any way to map an analog input (such as throttle, brake lever, etc.) to MSTS's keyboard inputs. What I mean is, MSTS seems to only be able to have a key for "increase throttle" or "decrease throttle", rather than a continuously analog input like a joystick or potentimeter.I just found out about the x-keys and PIEngineering's other products last week. I'm wondering if these somehow get around this problem, and if so, how? Say you have a throttle handle hooked up to one of their devices and you move it from 60% to 30% for example. What does it send to the computer? Is it as simple as X-Keys tracking the throttle position and sending a burst of "decrease throttle" keypresses? If so, does that give accurate enough control? I mean, with the throttle in the middle, will MSTS always register it as 50%?I'd really, really like to set up a control stand, and am psyched to see the things on the PIEngineering web site's "coming soon" list, like analog guages. But I don't know if I can wait for all their turn-key stuff, and would still like to try building one myself. Thanks for any input (no pun intended.) - Jeff

RE: What I want for Christmas!

Hi Jeff !This is my MSTS X-Keys Pad:What I want for Christmas! – image 3Can only replicate the MSTS Keys and Keys Combinations as used on the Keyboard. The RAILDRIVER is supposed to give you Incremental / Decremental Control like with Real Controllers. Until I get one myself I can not be more specific !The problem with MSTS is, unlike FS2002, that various Locos have their own individual SPEED and BRAKING parameters in their .ENG Files. Will take a Genius to find a common denominator ?

>The RAILDRIVER is supposed to give you Incremental /
>Decremental Control like with Real Controllers. Until I get
>one myself I can not be more specific ! Mnnn. That's what I'm hoping for. I can't see how they could really do it though. Darn Microsoft. If they had just included joystick inputs, it would be so easy. Everything else maps to buttons very naturally, except for the throttle and brakes. And the standard two joystick/two axis game port inputs would have been perfect, at least for diesels: JOY1X = throttle, JOY1Y = automatic, JOY2X = independant, JOY2Y = dynamic. Grrr. It looks like the X-Keys folks did exactly what I wanted to with their full-size cab simulator setup somehow though!

>their .ENG Files. Will take a Genius to find a common
>denominator ? True. I'd be happy with just the standard diesel controls though. Actually, I'd be more than happy, I'd be thrilled. And probably the most annoying thing is knowing that Microsoft has the necessary code built in to the game - you can control the game using the mouse and on-screen controls the way you should be able to, so the game engine is obviously able to deal with a control being instantly positioned anywhere in it's range, not just tapped up incrementally. Sigh.

No they aren't. The fastest diesel traction train and non-electric train is also in Britain. And by the way, the british class 421 was one of the most successful EMU's. It was made in the 1970s and still in service now.-------------My favourite LUL train-------------

Yes Philip, ROLLER COASTERS indeed !When I was your age back in Vienna, one of my Uncles was part owner of the only Scenic Roller Coaster in the PRATER Amusement Park. Made famous by the film "The Third Man" and the RIESENRAD (Giant Ferris Wheel) in it.Most of if burned down during Air raids and shelling in the last days of the war I was a soldier in, fighting the Russians trying to take the City.I lost count of the FREE Rides I had on my Uncle's Roller Coaster. They had to prise me out of the Front Seat of the Leadging Car with a Crowbar !!! But being also a Privat Pilot (Retired) I also like Looping the Loop on some of the hairy modern ones. You can see me and my Son on the Hairiest Ride in Florida's Walt Disney Park a couple of years ago, click on my "Cocoa Beach" picture at the bottom of the Main Page at:
www.otto-wipfel.co.ukThat was the third and last ride in succession ! Even my Son Robert had enough by then !
