Here's the latest shots of my project ...New front view. Nose colored for CP Rail, coordinates moved (to 'proper' place, which doesn't help you guys with signal woes), and all controls have had alphas added to eliminate lines. So far I have left windows dirty cause I kinda like it, but am planning to do a cleaned version also.Update On Sd40-2 Cab Mod – image 2Also toying with opening up the engineers window ...Update On Sd40-2 Cab Mod – image 3Waddya think??Still need to generate the 640x480 version of the front before I am finished. Then, what color nose should I do next? Hmmm.....Ray

Brrr. . .Somebody close the window! ! ! Actually, I like that idea, esp for summertime. Is it just me, or is the angle on the nose wrong? Shouldn't it be more parellel with the far right-hand railhead? It does something weird to my eyes' perspective, but I can't tell if it needs to be changed or not. Here's what I mean:

RE: UPDATE ON SD40-2 CAB MOD ...

I find this sort of stuff totally weird!OK, for train spotters and other anoraks, it might make some sense, but the majority here have never sat in a train cab, and personally I could not care less if the out of window detail is not pixel perfect! Could somebody explain to me why a train sim has to be this accurate?David

> I find this sort of stuff totally weird!Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
> OK, for train spotters and other anoraks, it might make some senseThere's alot of us here!
> but the majority here have never sat in a train cabThat's the point. Of that majority, this is probably the closest a good number of them will get to it. And, my friend, it's been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember, and I'm sure I'm not the only one here. I tried (many times) to get hired on to no avail. I would still be trying today, but I got married and my wife wasn't too thrilled with the kind of lifestyle that career offers. So I settled on my second preference ... graphic arts.
> personally I could not care less if the out of window detail is not pixel perfect!Again, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
> Could somebody explain to me why a train sim has to be this accurate? For you, maybe it doesn't. But for those of us who enjoy this aspect it matters alot. Like I said, this is probably the closest I'm going to get to being a locomotive engineer.Ray

Perhaps you should you look at your box of Train Simulator...it's not too hard to notice "As Real as it Gets" I care about detail a lot! If I have 10 BNSF Dash 9s in a consist, all of them will have different numbers! lol------------------------------------------------------------I'll never let go of the railroad that inspired me to be involved with trains, the Union Pacific!Update On Sd40-2 Cab Mod – image 6John Ekhoff

One question: what's the little thing sticking out of the nose on the BNSF SD40?

Nice job. I will definitely use that cab on all of my CP SD40-2s. Do you think that you could do another version and remove the nose from the window, so you could use this cabview on a number of different locomotives without having to do a separate nose for each one?

RE: UPDATE ON SD40-2 CAB MOD ...

That is the independent air brake handle...It is operated by turning many times and WILL cause wheelslip if applied too hard...( lets air out of the piston on the wheel's resivors on the loco) but the loco must be on and the wheel is like any other on a train consist

RE: UPDATE ON SD40-2 CAB MOD ...

Transcon, That is a vent for the low nose. Most Railroads have a tolet in the low nose for the crew. What you are seeing is the vent in the opened position. It's there to let a little fresh air in, or a little stale air out . If I remember correctly, it's handle is threaded, so the whole thing screws out to open the vent.Have Fun,
Rich S.

RE: UPDATE ON SD40-2 CAB MOD ...

LOL! Maybe an air filter intake, who knows? I am sure a techie will reply. Re the other replies, it is a train sim, not brain surgery. We have already established that the speeds are artificially set too high (ie you are going faster than the speed settings indicate). The couplers are too weak. The comfort levels are totally arbitary. A lot of the brake controls do not work to spec. Some of the gradients are too harsh etc etc.So we split hairs about a cab viewpoint!David
