Just wondering if anyone out there has tried the patch that is supposed to help with front coupler capability and what not, on the Windows XP Home platform. Just wondering, as I don't want to even chance losing everything I have to try something that didn't work worth a damn on my old system.System specs Same as Snipers only a 300w tower instead of a 350w, and a 64meg card instead of a 128, and XP in place of 98. (Really, I've only had my new tower of power for a couple of weeks, but can't remember for the life of me what's in it. Just found a post with Sniper's specs and said build something like that). The RE made me crazy, crazy, crazy, you try typing messages with your tongue because the straightjacket won't let you use your hands.LC17

Loosecannon;I've got XP home with the patch and didn't have any problems. Can't remember how many files it changed, somewhere around 10 so you can take only what parts you want and see the affect they have. When you click on it, say ok then click run winzip. Then you will see all the files. By the way, it has 25 files, just checked.

"try something that didn't work worth a damn", I got 98SE, and altho there are limitations to it, the front coupler patch works for me. One limitation is the coupler window, it will only display 5 or 6 cars ahead of the engine, so you gotta uncouple it in chunks. Another problem is recoupling when you're trying to uncouple, the big problem there is acceleration. The diesels in notch 1 accelerate away too quickly, so you have to apply about 30% independent (loco) brake, set reverse and notch 1, then uncouple and slowly release the loco brake (about 12 to 15%) until it barely starts moving, about 0.3mph until you have 5 feet of seperation, then release the brake the rest of the way and accelerate normally. The added drag from the brakes keeps notch 1 power from immediately going to 3 or 4 mph, and even 1mph is too high and it will recouple. If it happens, just increase engine brake without changing anything else, uncouple again and release less engine brake this time.Last item, a lot of people were reporting lockups, and I experienced them too. I'm almost 90% certain (as sure as anyone can be with intermittent problems) that the lockups are caused by using the front coupler when the car is on the player path, so when you're setting up activities set the end point or reverse point for the player path so it stops short of the loose consist. Or better still put the loose consists in sidings, spurs, and yard tracks with manual switches that aren't actually on the "official" player path.BTW, anyone notice the V 1.2 patch SD-40 comes with a caboose?!
Sniper,Yeah, it probably works on yours okay because my old system was a computer that was set up for office work, not for sims. Anyways, I noticed that the new SD-40 came with a caboose, but did you notice the gondola or the refrigerator car with a reefer sound. Pretty cool. I have already started hacking the horn sounds from the new SD-40 into my gp-38's and plan on aliasing the fleet of 40' and 45's to sound like this one. Dunno if I am going to use the cabview though, maybe, play wait and see, probably test drive it around to get used to it. I have cabviews from Maple Leaf Tracks that have digital speedos (easier train handling), that I may just stick to.David and Ray,Thank you both for your replies, I am going to install the patch on my D drive with Train Simulator, so if anything goes screwy, I can just erase it, clean the registry, and keep the original on my C drive. Having a partitioned hard drive does have its benifits.Maybe if it works 90% of the time on my system, I try XTracks3.3. And Sniper, we should talk about the way you were laying the dumbtracks over the real ones to get really rusty tracks. I have some spots in my route that could use them, and we both know that I am more than crazy enough to take the time to place them. Thanks again to everyone who replied. The RE made me crazy, crazy, crazy, you try typing messages with your tongue because the straightjacket won't let you use your hands.LC17
Microsoft should hire Sniper as technical advisor at about, say $120,000 a year. With all the tech. help that has been offered, your basically doing the original designers job. I should mention all the other train sim fans that have added tweaks and fixes to this much changed sim, compared to what came out of the box in June 2001. Yes the patch has helped in the front coupler problem, some what. Its still a pain in the arse, to push a long string of cars, where you want them to go, only to get kicked out of the sim, with the send-don't send telling you goodbye, sim over. I don't know of any other program (sim),(game) that the user's have improved to the level that we have here now. The orignal designers of this sim should thank alot of very creative people, for the countless improvements that,we see here now. Come to think about it, Microsoft (Kuju) hasn't said a fricken word about anything.Don't want to offend anybody Just some thoughts Dejoh
Hee-hee, I want $150,000 and stock options. "Come to think about it, Microsoft (Kuju) hasn't said a fricken word about anything.", that's one of the prime reasons MS is such a favorite target for flaming, other software developers release half finished stuff with bugs in it, but at least talk about it and let you know what's going on. MS is usaully a bunch of monks, they take a vow of silence and you never hear a word until a patch comes out. Midtown Madness had problems with the Nvidia GEFORCE 2 series for years, but from the website "news" and FAQs you woulda thought everything's rosy, I must be the only one having this problem. Hunt for solutions you get sales pitches. It wasn't until recently while looking for something else that I discovered they made a patch for Midtown Madness 2 to fix the GEFORCE 2 display problem, and there was never any kind of announcement, it just appeared one day. That's what they really need to do, even "yeah, we know, we're working on it, don't really know when" at least lets you know they care.As far as Tricky Tracks, it's still loaded with unresolved problems, but I'm uploading a PO&N6beta to Ottodad's website in a few days, so you can pick the pieces out of that and see if you can help fix them up. Biggest problem is the transition from one texture to another, and covering dynamic tracks, we're still working on that.
