Mar-30-01, 05:45 AM (EST) "Hardware Reqs. for MS Train sim" Thanks for setting up this new forum. I know it'll be helpful to me when I take my first turn in the cab of MS' new train sim.Anyone know anything more about what the hardware/OS requirements will be for this new product? At the MS site, they seem to have not made up their mind yet .Lookin forward to the fun! Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-30-01, 07:32 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Hardware Reqs. for MS Train sim" Well, you went to the right place for information It's going to be pretty hard for us to know the requirements until either Microsoft announces them or someone outside Microsoft actually has a copy of the sim. They have announced as a design goal that a super high end computer won't be required, but probably even they don't know the real requirements until the software is totally finished. We should know soon... Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-30-01, 09:04 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Hardware Reqs. for MS Train sim" According to Vern's preview of the pre-beta version, it run very good on projection screen at resolution 1600 x 1400 under PIII 800 and GeForce 2 GTS. Of course on 17" monitor with resolution of 800 x 600 or 1024x752 32bit it should run very smooth.
Summing up: Two parameters are of great importance in this simulation, the CPU frequency (speed)and the graphic processor.
I think that in todays standards, PIII-1000 MHz with 128MB SDRAM and nVidia GeForce 2 GTS 32MB would be the right solution for your question. Adam Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-30-01, 10:28 AM (EST) 3. "RE: Hardware Reqs. for MS Train sim" Thanks Adam, that helps 'cause i have shopping for a new Mac-Hine, and am thinking of going to a full-blown game machine reserving my old Sony PII 600Mhz for home affairs and minor business crunching!Thnaks again,

Mar-30-01, 11:47 AM (EST) 4. "RE: Hardware Reqs. for MS Train sim" That's a pretty high end machine you're suggesting, Adam...I would hope it would run good on that! But let's hope it really takes a lot less otherwise there will be lots of unhappy people. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-31-01, 07:57 AM (EST) 6. "RE: Hardware Reqs. for MS Train sim" I think it will run just fine on a PIII 600 ( probably less). Again however, if its like FS2K, and I assume it would be, where the user sets parameters with sliders. A person may have to "bite the bullet" a little and not set everything to full. But then again, anyone who tries to tell me they can see scenery detail 75 miles away in real life... Weeellll Jim

Apr-03-01, 10:26 AM (EST) 8. "RE: Hardware Reqs. for MS Train sim" I couldn't believe it'd be as demanding as fs2k. Any sim that deals in only 2 dimensions and without all the complex physics of a flight sim should be a lot easier on machines. - Matt Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-03-01, 10:38 AM (EST) 9. "RE: Hardware Reqs. for MS Train sim" Well, it's not really 2D, at least the scenery isn't. It will still have to model 3D objects viewed from various distances. Plus it will need to show a greater number of close up, highly detailed objects to make the sim "as real as it gets". It's certainly different, but not necessarily easier. It's really more like the car racing games then a flightsim as far as what needs to be displayed...what kind of machine do those take?

Apr-04-01, 01:57 PM (EST) 10. "RE: Hardware Reqs. for MS Train sim" I don't see this quite as demanding as FS2K. For one thing, the fastest trains still won't be going as fast as a fully loaded 747 rolling down the runway for takeoff. Also, there will probably never be a time when, say, the entire downtown Chicago needs to be rendered at once, like it does at certain altitudes in FS2K - there are a WHOLE lot o buildings there! I think this sim will boil down more to the video card than even FS does as far as performance is concerned.

Mar-30-01, 05:23 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Hardware Reqs. for MS Train sim" Hi there. I'll be posting the hardware requirements in the MSTS FAQ (located right here at Train-Sim.Com) as soon as they're announced. I can tell you what OS's it will run on: Win 95, 98, 2000, Me and XP. I'll try and post here (and, obviously, update the FAQ) when I learn more.----------------------------------------------------------------

Mar-31-01, 03:01 PM (EST) 7. "RE: Hardware Reqs. for MS Train sim" Even with the high end machines, we are still confronting these small bug which making the short but annoying pauses.
Right now, I've PIII-1000 with 256MB SDRAM and ELSA Gladiac GeForce 2 GTS 32MB, but even with this by all means strong computer, there are the aforementioned pauses when playing the more dense graphics routes of BVE. These pauses are located in the same points, which means there are some glitches in programming code (probably).
Buying the best affordable equipment, will save some frustration in the future, when taking into concideration that Auran's Trainz would possibly demand much more power than MSTS.Adam Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-06-01, 03:22 AM (EST) 11. "RE: Hardware Reqs. for MS Train sim" The firs alert concerning the frame rate came from the screenshots posted yesterday in which were FPS indicators.
In one situation it was 6 and in the second as I recal it was 7 FPS. Pretty low. They were taken from the the Technical Beta, but it can suggest about the problems which the developing team is facing in this stage. It could also give us a clue about the last release slip announced by Amazon.
My conclusion is, MSTS will certainly require a strong machine.

Apr-07-01, 09:22 AM (EST) 12. "RE: Hardware Reqs. for MS Train sim" Kind of funny they didn't turn the frame rate display off before taking the screen shots. Hopefully we're getting worried over nothing, but certainly having a fast machine won't hurt.
