RE: Frame Rates

i wonder if you're processor is having trouble keeping up with that Ti? but still, 14FPS is pretty low, i got better than that with my old PII@350 w/ a Riva128 with "decent" graphics. you're not sliding all the sliders to the right and expecting awesome FPS are you?

RE: Frame Rates

Only 14 FPS?Anything under 10 is considered to be slow, I wouldn't be too concerned with a 14, especailly in an activity. A FPS of 14, you should not see any slow or sluggish performance, so I'm not sure what the problem is. Enjoy what you have, 14 is not all that bad. It's probally about average. Some get into the 20's, but for the most part, mid to high teens is good running.Chris

RE: Frame Rates

If you are running Windows XP you might be squeezed in the RAM dept. Going with more RAM will boost performance. NOTE, it you are using Win98 you can only go as high as 512mb of RAM.You might try toning down the resolution to 24bit.

RE: Frame Rates

Many have noted erratic behavior in Win98SE when the system board has more than 512mb. Essentially Win98 was not designed or coded to work with more than 512. Now that does not mean that exceeding the RAM limit without erratic behavior is not possible...in fact it is possible, but most who try do run into problems. If you have not experienced problems...then count yourself fortunate. With Win98, and when running MSTS, 512mb of system RAM is plenty.

RE: Frame Rates

Charles, it seems like I end up arguing with you every time I bump into you, and I really don't intend to, honest to god. I gotta go with Lawrence on this one tho, I got Win98SE with 768 megs of DDR RAM, which not only helps enormously in the route editor, it also smooths out the sim.http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID3/11645.htmlThat thread gives some tips on how to adjust the MSTS settings for better framerates, and goes into how to hack the system.ini file to get Win98SE past the 512 meg barrier. That said, the initial poster didn't mention type of hard disk or RAM speed, for AMD systems there's a huge difference between PC-2100 DDR RAM and PC-133 SDRAM, and altho I haven't owned an Intel chip for years, I know they have several different speeds of RDR RAM, or whatever they call it. That sleepy old Radeon 7500 combined with the P-4 2.26 GHZ indicates to me that some economizing was done on that system tho, question is what other bottlenecks are in there.A lot of discussions on framerates are completely meaningless, "I get 14FPS" or "I get 60FPS" conveys no information at all unless the poster specifies when, where, and under what circumstances. Tower case, 350 watt power supply
Three 80mm 12v case fans
Motherboard: ASUS A7A-266
Processor: AMD Palimino XP1600+
Memory: 768MB PC-2100 DDR RAM
Video: NVIDIA GeForce 4 Ti-4400 128MB AGP
Hard disk: WD Caviar Ultra ATA-100 7200rpm 40 gig hd

In the cabview (f45 in the file library), meeting a short AI train in the open country, 25FPS.Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 2
An external view looking back over the train in a yard full of cars with an AI train passing on another track, drops to 12FPS.I can create a new route with very little scenery and drive a short train on it in explore mode at 60fps, but who the hell cares! I need action and eye-candy, and I'll give up 40FPS, a little smoothness, and quite a big portion of my checkbook to get it. Many pundits familiar with the film industry constantly argue that framerates over 24 are meaningless because the human eye can't detect the difference. They're partially right, the reason they're full of it is because the sampling on most FPS counters updates only once per second, and the FPS can rise and fall a lot quicker than that. But they have a valid point, with the 7200rpm hard disk, the 128mb Ti-4400, and the double dynamic rate RAM I get very little stuttering at 15 FPS, as long as it's a constant 15 and doesn't vary from 10 to 20 every few seconds. A steady 15FPS looks and plays a LOT better than 45FPS dropping to 25FPS and bouncing back up again, because it's smoother. Even if the counter doesn't display a drop below 25FPS, the jerks when it suddenly drops from 45 to 25 is definitely noticeable.
So I guess to sum it all up, the key is getting all the system components running as smoothly as possible together, buying an expensive AGP video card and saving money with a serial bus hard drive ain't gonna smooth it out."512mb of system RAM is plenty" - RouteArtisan, 2002"You'll never need more than 128mb of system RAM" - ElekTek employee, 1998"64 kilobytes of RAM is ridiculous, you can't even fill 32k with meaningful code" - Radio Shack employee, 1977

RE: Frame Rates

There was a great page of Win 98 Tweaks to make your entire system run better. No matter what the System.
Win 95 and 98 default had a huge number of default settings that can be adjusted. Like vxd files, etc.
Try www.guru3d.com and/or www.overclockers.com for system tweaks.Soory I can't remember where it was, but if you can find it, the instructions are easy, and the improvements are noticeable.
