This might be a stupid question, but i'll ask it anyway. I was wondering if anyone knew how to change to a different downloading program instead of the default windows one?

It depends what you mean, and what connection you have to the web. If you have broadband, stick with that. If you have a 56k connection, there are various programs that are supposed to speed things up, but a: they dont really work, and b: they often have spyware installed. These days its broadband or nothing, as far as I can see. If you have a 56k line, it is a case of download, go to bed, and see if you get the file in the morning. Some people reckon download excelleraters work, but they don't do a lot. In any case, the bandwidth on this site for downloads is very narrow anyway. David

Sorry to disagree with you here but actually they do help even with broadband.......I have cable and was only getting about 9 or 10 before getting download accelerator, now I get anywhere from 40 to 50........so there is a difference........major difference in my opinion..........They do work......and they work well......Try download accelerator, great program.....and there is no spyware.......People should be careful about giving out false information like this.......If you don't believe me........try it, and you will see the difference.......and it is very easy to install.......Tim

Maybe "download manager" would be a better phrase, and for anyone with a dial-up connection they are pretty much essential. I have used three of them but am now sticking with Download Accelerator Plus (DAP).The point is not so much faster downloads (although I often get 50 to 100% improvement) but resuming downloads and quieuing. As for "spyware" I guess that depends on your definition. The free version of DAP downloads ads to a subfolder. But Ad-Aware doesn't consider it spyware, and my firewall has never reported it trying to communicate out.People can get a little paranoid about the spyware issue. Every cookie on your computer is a little snitch, but it is very hard to browse the web without accepting them. The trick is to have a firewall and use a program like WebWasher from Siemens to selectively block only a few annoying or harmful ones.
