This is a photo of a former SP SD70M painted by UP. Compare this unit with the EMD painted 4000 series units behind it.

I'm not sure, but somewehre I heard UP was repainting ALL units with the CNW-style "lightning" bolt transition between the gray and the yellow.Funny thing is, this is the first unit I've seen done as such -- though what I heard was about a year or so ago.

No it's not the lightning stripe that's odd, it's the gray/yellow color separation point is lower on the body, meaning there is more gray paint than usual. Also notice the red stripe extends forward to the nose and the UP wings are lower. It's either a test, a hybrid, or a mistake.Another little tid bit some of you may be interested in. The older sister to the locomotive in the picture (3978) UP 3977 an ex-SP SD70 is still painted in SP red and gray with UP red numbers with the yellow background paint below the cab windows. This of course is being applied to most ex SP and CNW units because of the unit renumbering taking place. That's the quick fix until a particular unit is fully repainted. It was just a bit odd to see this on a SD70 as that has been the only comfort cab unit I have seen with just a new number applied. And shoskins those trailing SD70's in the picture do have the lightning stripe applied. See picture below for an example and also compare this paint scheme with the one in the photo linked above.PatchCrew

The first two UP patch jobs ever were SP 9801 and 9811, which became UP 3975 and 3986.
