Some loco's, the smoke that comes from the engines is more, and darker than others. Is there an easy way to modify the file so that heavy, black plumes of smoke come from the engines? Thanks, Chris

RE: Is there an easy way to make more smoke and darker?

Do you really want more smoke and darker. In reality, a good fireman that knew his engine and route would have only a clean steam plume when running. There would be some smoke when he stoked the fire. On most railroads, fireman would be reprimanded for "dirty stacks" since this is a waste of fuel. Repeat performances would cause them to be "fired" from their jobs.I have found that most of the programmers building steam engines on TS have the physics just about right: Black smoke to start changing to mostly steam as the train gets under way and back to black as the fire is stoked when going up a grade.Remember, actual steam engine pictures taken on cool or cold days are much more impressive that those taken on hot summer days if the fireman is doing his job correctly.Carlyle Thompson

I'm sorry, I should have been more specific. I'm looking to get more smoke, and darker smoke out of the diesel locomotives. I don't know a train buff anywhere who doesn't appreciate a diesel bellowing black smoke. These days however, it is becoming more and more a rare site, with the new diesels being more friendly to the enviroment. Still, the older diesels still provide us with a show every now and then.Chris

I tried that with no luck, I was trying to make a dash 8 smoke like these pictures on this site http://lrs.railspot.com/hnwob.htm It's a shame, because the newer diesels really arn't that interesting

IcyfireThe engine in that pic has a mechanical problem. Several things can cause smoke like that. Two of the major ones:1. Injector problems.2. Turbo problems. In otherwords, even if you did get your MSTS Dash 9 to smoke like that, it wouldn't be typical. In fact, the older diesels didn't typically produce such smoke. Notable exceptions were Alco's and their turbo lag. But even an Alco, smoke like that would indicate a problem.Have fun!Andre Ming

Inside the GLOBAL folder there is a dieselsmoke.ace file. That ''should'' be the coloring and maybe even the density of the smoke. As for how much smoke you can get and how to do it... I can't guess beyond the suggestion that maybe in the engine file in the DieselSpecialEffects section there is something that might be a factor.Stevealex

Maybe, just maybe...see what the steam smoke is set at, and see if the diesel can be set at that. Just a thought.

RE: Is there an easy way to make more smoke and darker?

Hi,
I too would like to see lots of black smoke.
But I notice that the locos have a little black smoke, but most engines only give out light grey exhaust.
Is there a way to make exhuast?
Thanks.

Look in Eng file for your loco. You should see headings for initial smoke effect\density,maximum smoke effect\density,plus smoke rate.play around with these,if you want to.You could also try upping fuel consumption\hour.More fuel, more smoke

RE: Is there an easy way to make more smoke and darker?

Look in the ENG (3/4 the way down the page) file for (from the Dash 9):DieselSmokeEffectInitialMagnitude( 2.2 )
DieselSmokeEffectMaxMagnitude( 2.2 )
DieselSmokeEffectInitialSmokeRate( 0.2 )
DieselSmokeEffectMaxSmokeRate( 10 )These, and other parameters, can be used to configure a locomotive with high mileage and age.

Okay, so would it be safe to assume that by making the number larger, that would do the trick?
