Can someone please explain the major differences between these 2 downloads. Any preferences, in terms of compressing duplicate files on routes? Thanks!

RE: Route Control vs. Route Riter

Hi Curt,As the author of Route Riter, I may be a bit biased, however the following may help.Route Control compresses routes by gathering most of the shape and texture files from nominated routes into a single route thus avoiding duplication. It also collects and compresses the route's other files such as the tiles and world tiles. You have to then nominate which route you want to run, and it uncompresses the necessary files and allows you to run the route.Route control also has other features such as allowing you to check activities etc.Route-Riter on the other hand handles this differently, it goes through your route and reads the World tiles to see which shapes are actually used, then through those shapes to see which textures are used, and deletes all the unused files. Savings of some 200-300 meg per route are often achieved. Route Riter also has utilities for checking activities, consists etc. (and it is free).

RE: Route Control vs. Route Riter

Hi CurtI have both programs. Had to make a choice between(Route Control) Selecting a route to operate and then wait for the program to install it, or(Route Riter) Having ALL my routes fully installed (so I can go quickly to whatever one I choose to work) but squeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzed down to a size that my 40gb disk can handle. With all my downloads so far (and some other BIG usage), I have about 18gb still free. Since space is less important than convience right now, all my routes are outside Route Control. If and when it DOES become a problem, I'll move the less desirable routes to Route Control. Here are some examples of the space Route Riter has saved on my machine:
CSTRR: before 568 mb,after 156
East Metro: before 531, after 189
Ohio Rail: before 507, after 313
PO&N: before 495, after 147
Sea View: before 554, after 230These small sizes really help when it comes to backing them up to CD's.I currently use Route Control mostly as a FINAL check for all work done in my MSTS system. It has caught problems that slipped by the other two programs I use: ConBuilder and Antivity Analysis.Hope that gives you a feel for the way to go.Ted
