Hello everyone.
I am waiting for my new Dell 4500 system to show up. I can't wait to see what it will do with MSTS. I was wondering if there was anything I should know about with MSTS and XP. I have a 3 year old Dell with Win98 and I get along with it very well. I have seen some posts in here about XP and potential problems. So with time and anticipation on my hands till next week I want to try and have all my ducks in a row as to get the best out of MSTS with XP.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful and appreciated
Thanks..........

RE: Any Words of Wisdom?

I have XP Home as original installed on my new HP510n machine. Haven't had a SINGLE problem with it. Only thing special I had to do was download a Java installation from the Microsoft site to enable SkyConductor to work. Well worth it.Good luck.

I think somewhere tucked away on this machine I still have the java zip. I need to go through and save what zips I want on CD to transfer over to the new comp. Thanks for that reminder. I have gotten so used to Win98 I am a little nervouse for change.. But I am sure it will be worth it.

RE: Any Words of Wisdom?

Watch the Java zip you might still have on your Win98 install. Might, but also might NOT, work on XP. Get it fresh from a source that says it WILL work on XP. No sense starting your new machine with a potential big problem.Ted

RE: Any Words of Wisdom?

Very good point Ted. It never crossed my mind. I suppose I should also get a fresh WinZip download as well. Can you still get the trial version of WinZip?

XP has built-in Zip support. Less features than WinZip, but it works. So you don't need WinZip unless you want to do more than the routine opening/adding/extracting of files from a zip.

RE: Any Words of Wisdom?

I can see this is going to be a whole new ball game. I think, the zip support will work fine for all I have now is an unregistered version of WinZip and all I need to do is as you said, routine opening/adding/extracting.
Thanks.......

RE: Any Words of Wisdom?

Will a new winzip installation be free? I use zipCentral (freeware). The software download sites have lots of freeware zip programs, the one I use I like much bette then winzip, more features, easier to use... Just a thought...Any Words of Wisdom? – image 1

RE: Any Words of Wisdom?

My biggest problem with the XP system was getting all my old programs from the old computer with Win98 into the new XP one. Some programs wouldn't work (even with the compatibility switch), some I had to get new drivers for, etc. Took a while to do it all.MSTS I got after I was working on the XP machine. It installed with no problem. Also get the update for it from MS site.Ted

RE: Any Words of Wisdom?

I was asked by Dell if I wanted a 40 dollar program that takes all my settings, programs and the like from my old Win98 system to my new XP system and I declined it. I know it will take a while to get things how they were before but I would rather just start fresh and clean.
As far as the update, I'm not sure if I will mess with it. I just did a reinstall of MSTS about 2 weeks ago and that was the very first thing I added to the sim. The thing is, I have Dekosofts GP38-2 set and replaced the default geep with those. Well the fix doesn't seem to do much with add ons for when I play the Timesaver Route the only time I ever had a crash was when I tried the front coupler and that is all it took. Sometimes the front coupler would work on Dekosofts locos and sometimes not. The funny thing is, I seem to have more trouble with the front coupler on cars which don't have hand brakes than ones that do. I wonder, has anyone ever looked into this or is it just a coincedence? I also prefer mainline running over switching.
Anyway, thanks for all the info and tips with the XP program.
It is very helpful..

RE: Any Words of Wisdom?

That's the way I did it too. Step by step, my own way. Ignored the program to do it AUTOMATICALLY. I want to KNOW what goes on in my machine, not let some program have its head with it.Good Luck.
