In case you have not yet looked in the library, a new CSX route set in Tenn./ NC has been uploaded. I have a question about the install though. It says to build a scratch directory and unzip the route into that, and then to create a new folder for the route, and copy the scratch folder into the new "Blueridge" folder. My question is, what is a scracth directory? I've never seen that term before, and before I go and download this monster file, I want to make sureI'm doing it right. Thank you,ChrisBogleyc@msn.com

RE: Question about the new CSX route just uploaded toda

Have not looked at the readme file yet, but an educated guess would be the 'scratch' folder is just another name for a 'temp' directory (to be deleted after route is installed). Just a method to keep all the extracted files in one place.

Think about it this way...You are about to organize some paper work on your desk that just arrived as "package" to be inserted into your special notebook. You know you have all the pieces you need in the "package" but you don't know exactly how it will go together because you aren't sure how your notbook is organized.
* You create a temporary "folder" and label it "scratch". You can call it anything you like, actually.* Now, you have this "package" called a zip file. You use a package opener "WINZIP" (or a knife if you want to continue the analogy) and empty the contents into the new folder that you called "scratch".* Ok, Now you have dumped the contents into a temporary folder and you still haven't "screwed up" your notebook... that's a good thing.* If your lucky, your package also came with a little installation "robot" that will now take all of the mixed up contents of the "scratch" folder and PROPERLY install them into the notebook without messing up what is already there (Namely, the MSTS installation). This robot is commonly called something like "install.bat" or "setup.exe".Once this is all done, you no longer need the "scratch" or temporary folder, so you can throw it in the trashbin.
Note: The term "scratch" is an old system administrator term based on the word "scratchpad". It is used as something you write on that you don't plan to keep. In other words: "temporary". It commonly applies to things like RAM, TAPES or system directories...
Sorry for the wacked out explanation... I figured you could use it.Question about the new CSX route just uploaded today – image 1Pete Willard

RE: Question about the new CSX route just uploaded toda

Chris, The meaning of stratch directory goes back to the old stratch pad used to write down memo's or notes. In computer/PC lingo it means you create a new folder(directory) on your PC, name it anything you wish. Then unzip the blueridge.zip into it .Hope this helps ya out.Cline

Thanks for posting this question - I saw the reference, too, and wondered just a little. I think the developer is referring to the kind of folder I call "tests" that I keep under "my downloads/msts downloads." I took it to mean "scratch" as in "scratch built," i.e., "original," as in "start from scratch." It never ocurred to me that there was a semantic connection between "scratch built" and "scratch paper," but it's plausible. How either connects to "scratch golfer," "up to scratch" or "I need some scratch for gas" eludes me. It's also funny that you younger guys think of a "scratch pad" as a medieval artifact, like the IBM Selectric and (you'll have to look this one up) carbon sets for office work. I'm getting the same feeling I got when the NASA scientists in "Apollo 13" whipped out their slide rules, and half the audience - the older half - broke up laughing.P.S. - I also remember having a problem myself with a reference to a "root folder" in some "route download" instructions!

RE: Question about the new CSX route just uploaded toda

I've downloaded the route and it created a folder without me having to make one.I'm not sure why you'd have to create a folder when unzipping the file will do all the work for you.I didn't run into any problems.

Thats what I was thinking, and looking for in an answer. When you unzip a file, it creates the folder by default, so it should work just as other routes do. Unzip and run the installme.bet file.I'll see what happens, Chris

That's the Clinchfield Route. You know... if'n a guy downloaded that route, replaced all that sinful "new stuff" with some of the Clinchfield's F's and Geeps (available in the library)... now you're RAILROADING!!Sheesh. Just what I need: Another new route that's trying desperately to push my "go get it Dude" button. Good grief, how BIG of a hard drive will I NEED FOR THIS SIM???? WILL it ever end? RE: Question about the new CSX route just uploaded toda

Nope, it will never end. Bought a new Dell in March with 20GB hard drive, and almost ran out of space by June. Added on a 120GB hard drive and so far still have plenty of space. Train sim is up to 10GB with another 10GB backup. Keep it coming!!!!!!
