suprised to see no one tackling this, somebody already made the cumbres and toltec scenic railroad, would it be possible to consider making the durnago and silverton narrow gauge railroad? suprised that the person that made the C&TSS hasn't made the D&SNGRR route yet.Route suggestion, durango and silverton NG? – image 1

RE: route suggestion, durango and silverton NG?

Sign me up! I'm dialed up and awaiting to download it already! Plus, why not extend up from Silverton and encompass the three shortlines that penetrated some very imposing mountains? The Silverton RR (very cool line), the Silverton, Gladstone & Northerly, and the Silverton Northern.Only downside to the above in regards to MSTS: Two them used turntables.Andre Ming

>already! Good news for you two guys then, The Durango & Silverton is in progress with true narrow gauge track as well. It's a project being developed by another member of this forum but as it's a long term one he's not making any announcements about it yet. Trust me It'll be worth the wait!! Best Reagrds,

DROOOOL!!! A dream come true, actual narrow gauge track and next year I'm hoping to be on the real train in Durango, CO.P.S. All these great engines, cars and routes is killing my 40 gig HD. 100 gig here I come.John

RE: route suggestion, durango and silverton NG?

Now that's too cool, Fozzy.Question: With it being laid with narrow gauge track, will this preclude the use of a standard gauge loco/cars? I'm not conversant enough with this simming business to know. In my "other world" of model railroading, of course, this is not possible (unless the track is dual-gauge).Speaking of my "other world", I have an interest in Colorado NG, the Silverton area in particular. If this project is "early on", my only plea for the creator is to backdate his schematic far enough to glean all the switching/trackage that was at Silverton and along the line and shy away from doing it as it is "now. It's not near as interesting "now" as it was "then".Andre Ming

RE: route suggestion, durango and silverton NG?

Andre,All my testing has been obviously done with standard gauge
equipment, no worries. I haven't found a Silverton yard track
plan that exactly points to 1930-1940, so I'm using one from 1910.
It's remarkably similar to the less detailed 1951 USGS DRG.
I'm conveniently ignoring the "Silverton Northern" and
"Silverton Gladstone & Northerly" trackage.regards,
Charlie

RE: route suggestion, durango and silverton NG?

I'm glad you asked the question and am encouraged by the feed-back. I actually was hoping that the guy who gave us the C&T would come out with extentions that would get us to Silverton eventually and as much of the old Colorado rail system as possible. My only fear is that the "true narrow guage" idea is going to complicate things because I'm easily confused. Of course, when it comes out you can bet I'll learn a thing or two about MSTS narrow guage. Who knows it may end-up as a seperate narrow guage partition on my hard drive. I have ridden the Durango to Silverton line and I think it would be real cool to drive it, it should certainly bring back memories. I have been driving the C&T and hope to ride the line some day. With the virtual line completely memorized I expect that the experience should be enhanced somewhat. P.S. I hope he includes coal and water towers and a Y at Durango even if it is not prototypical since it is the only way we can turn and go back and forth. Thank you one and all.

RE: route suggestion, durango and silverton NG?

You must be looking over my shoulder. Coal and water
towers as well as OkrasaGhia's ng turntable are present. You take the RGS west over the Animas River to get to the
switchback which leads up to the American Smelting & Refining
Company. If you continue a little further on the RGS toward
Ridgeway, you will find a wye which is not visible from Durango. For now, don't expect to get any closer to Ophir & Telluride. regards,
charlie

RE: route suggestion, durango and silverton NG?

Those "extensions" are non-trivial. The 2 "easy" routes are the C&TS and the D&S, since they're still operating. There are some issues with historical accuracy, but the main line can be laid out in a relatively straightforward manner. My original goal for the C&TS was to learn how to build a route, so I could move on to building what I'm really interested in. I've got personal ties to the Santa Fe and Farmington Branches of the D&RGW, so I'm most interested in those. I'm in the process of "surveying" the route from Antonito to Santa Fe, and my intent is to build it in NG. A big part of the problem with these now-abandoned parts of the route is finding good maps for marking the route. Fortunately, most of the Chili Line (the Santa Fe branch) is marked as "old railroad grade" on current topos, but as one moves into areas that have been built up since the lines were abandoned, it's harder and harder to figure out where the rails were. Don't hold your breath - I figure it'll be near Christmas by the time it's close to being ready for public consumption.Andy

RE: route suggestion, durango and silverton NG?

Hey Guys
I'd love to see this one too! If you like scenic routes, I've also got one in the planning stages right now. I'm going to attempt to do the White Pass & Yukon RR in Alaska. I'm currently working on getting DEM data together and figuring out how to get it into the route editor so I can work with it. I stress that this is a LONG TERM PROJECT and a learning experience (especially since I've never built a route before), so don't expect it to be in the download library any time soon.GrizzlyRoute suggestion, durango and silverton NG? – image 25Route suggestion, durango and silverton NG? – image 26

While we're dreaming here, how about the RGS? There was never a more scenic NG railroad than that one. Some "geese" would be a nice project for a talented developer.ROCK

Well the discussion off forum between several narrow gauge developers, me included, is that we'd like to see the whole Colorado NG system built and running as a connected system in the sim. This may well be possible. I do hope so. All I can say is that I'd support that idea and be prepared to continue working on stock and locomotives for it. I guess the future is out there, we just have to make it happen.Best Regards,

RE: route suggestion, durango and silverton NG?

As I said up a ways, Colorado narrow gauge is my other "weakness" (1st generation diesels being my other), so the thought of helping to lift a freight over Alpine Pass with DSP&P equipment in the 1880's really gets my juices flowing!Perhaps the first decision is learning more about using "narrow gauge" track sections in MSTS? What kinds of compatibility issues will there be? Would we "lose" the excellent C&TRR and the "narrow gauge" type of equipment already out that runs on std. ga. track? My, my, the possibilities of this sim really do seem endless. Can't wait until I'm proficient enough to do some of this route/equipment work too!Andre Ming

>already out that runs on std. ga. track? You won't lose any of it when it comes to my rolling stock and Loco's Andre. Simply because I'm realeasing them in Both versions, Standard MSTS Gauge and True Narrow Gauge. You get the best of both worlds that way, and it means you can run them on any route at all.Best Regards,

Just a little while ago this update was posted. Sometimes just a simple search can bring all sorts of possibilites (and many questions answered).http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID6/5133.htmlI am very close to lots of old narrow gauge grades. One problem with some of the old lines is the fact that finding the old route and creating the tiles in the RE is a huge task. The old grades aren't laid out so you would have to hunt for them in the RE. Even making markers would take hours of research to find the exact spot where old railbeds lie. I would love to see a lot of these old routes made. If people were willing to help I may consider the task. Wouldn't it be cool to see several steam engines struggling to pull coal through the alpine tunnel, or snake through the Black Canyon. Not to mention the RGS around Telluride. So much trackage...Nick

OR, do I want to shove on the rear of that 1880's narrow gauge train up to Cumbres?Point, click: Instant era/theme swap and go railroading!Love it.Andre

Hi AndreI am currently working on another route but building a narrow gauge line has really caught my interest. Seeing Fozzy's steamer helped to push me into learning more about narrow gauge and I am reading all about the Denver South Park and Pacific right now. I didn't realize how much narrow gauge history is in my backyard.

Still thinking, but maybe this will be a possibility. If I can find all the info I need, I will most likely give it a go. Isn't MSTS great!!Nick
