As many of you have noticed when using the Big Boy in an activity it shows no water and no coal in the tender. The fix is simple. Open up the BigBoyPart1.eng file and search for this lineIsTenderRequired( 1 )change it to read thisIsTenderRequired( 0 )The only reason I can think of for this causing problems is the fact that engine #1 is not hooked to a tender its in fact hooked to engine #2, which is hooked to the tender. This SHOULD fix your problem it did for me, why this doesn't affect the Big Boy in explore route is beyond me. 1972

We discovered that while working on V2, and you're right it does solve the problem of coal and water not being reported correctly.. The problem then becomes re-coaling and re-watering the BB part1.. What I think can be done is to add the pickup points for a tender to the file, but specifying an offset that allignes them with the pickup points on the BB tender.. We're working on it..Cheers Harold
That should work for re-watering and re-coaling Harold, have to admit I avoid acivities that make me refuel like the plague so I didn't even consider that problem. But this knowledge will make lots of folks very happy until the official fix comes out I hope. 1972
Yep, I agree.. its a nice workaround, and a nice job of detective work on your part.. Basically you end up with Part1 being exactly like a tank engine..cheers Harold
Yes, I had this same thing and mentioned it in a post a while back. The only thing I can say for sure is that it shows values other than 0 for water and coal. I can't say it is working correctly though. It does not address the issue of the steam generation rate eventually falling off to less than the steam usage rate after about 40 - 45 minutes of running no matter how you run the Big Boy. And as I recall, the amount of coal in the tender never reduces, at least not in the 40 - 45 minutes of run time before steam generation rate falls below steam usage rate.I tried all sorts of things to keep the steam generation rate up. (I even used a bigger shovel (100lbs per scoop) by editing the *.eng file) but that didn't work. For short runs it's not an issue though so, still very much a grand model.
I was probably out of town when you posted that Ron and the thread got buried so deep I never saw it, But I have ran from end to end of MP3 and had no problems with steam generation? This sim is so goofy its fun to try to track all the possible causes for problems down. 1972
Did you use the auto fireman or fire it yourself?I started in Shelby, steam generation increased and then continued to slowly decrease (even at stop). I was hauling 35 refeers and maintaining 40-45 mph most of the time. By the time I got to Blackfoot (right before the mountains). I couldn't produce enough steam to keep going.
I use the AI fireman...as dumb as he is I can keep him lined out and producing steam by forcing the doors open and the blower on if necessary. Hope this helps? 1972
yep.. AI fireman seems to work better than manula firing. I suspect it cheats <G> We are working on the steam generation issues as best we can. If you have any thoughts on possible solution,s we'd love to hear 'em.. Cheers and thanks Harold (NALW-HAC)
