Here I was, quietly working on the next version of my route, and all these newbies come in and start making all this noise about which are the best routes to download, coming up with a system for rating routes, and the distraction finally drove me bonkers!
All this silly discussion about which are the best routes is dumb, everybody knows most of them have fancy-shmancy features, probably foriegn in origin with subliminal Anti-American messages, that only a yuppie art history major could love.
Time to get back to basics, get the Port Ogden and Northern, the one and only route that represents all across America! Let's all get into the patriotic spirit here, we're gonna sing a song. No, Garber, get rid of that banjo, I'm talking United States of America, not Confederate States of America, you wanna play hillbilly bluegrass go outside and sing "Dixie"! And give Klemm a shove, he's snoring so loud I can't hear if the rest of these guys are off key. On second thought, let him sleep, maybe it's better if I don't hear it.Okay, everybody ready? "America the Beautiful", and try to keep together, here we go."O BEAUTIFUL FOR SPACIOUS SKIES,"

>Actually the trains in Europe, though electrified, are as
>powerful as anything found in the US. And "American" trucks
>are made by subsidiaries of European truck makers..... I just couldn't resist rubbing it in....The world's biggest maker of heavy trucks is DaimlerChrysler. And contrary to public belief in the United States DaimlerChrysler was not founded through a merger on equal terms by Daimler of Germany and Chrysler of the US, instead Daimler gobbled up Chrysler. DaimlerChrysler Aktiengesellschaft is a German company, registered in Stuttgart, Germany. The chairman of the board, 8 out of 10 members of the board, the CEO, the head of DaimlerChrysler North America and most everyone else in the top echelon of DaimlerChrysler is German. And why do I mention that? Because DaimlerChrysler Aktiengesellschaft also own Freightliner, Western Star, Sterling and a number of other "American" truck manufacturers. The second biggest maker of heavy trucks in the world is Volvo Aktiebolag, a Swedish company registered in Gothenburg, Sweden. This company is, in the US, commonly thought to be owned by Ford Motor Company since "everyone" knows that Ford bought Volvo. Well, they didn't. Ford bought the Volvo car division, nothing else. Volvo AB is big in heavy vehicles, aircraft engines, marine engines and other stuff. So VTNA, Volvo Trucks North America, previously known as Volvo-White, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Volvo AB. And Mack is a wholly owned subsidiary of Renault Trucks, which in turn is a wholly owned subsidiary of Volvo AB.(The third biggest maker of heavy trucks in the world is AFAIK Saab-Scania Aktiebolag of Södertälje, Sweden. Saab-Scania sold their car division to General Motors about 10 years ago but remain big in heavy vehicles, military aircraft and other areas. But they've largely stayed out of the North American market.)So those "American" trucks mentioned by the previous poster aren't really American, they're rather German and Swedish.(The only American trucks are Kenworth and Peterbilt, both owned by PACCAR Inc of Seattle, WA.)

LAST EDITED ON Aug-07-02 AT 11:57 PM (EDT)

Very nice bit of route building Sniper! Where did you get the farm textures? You mentioned something about how to make snow textures last week... If you use PSP 7 to tweak textures, you can make a reasonable snow texture real quick by using the "color replacer" tool(see pic). Set the foreground color to white and the background color is set to any pixel in the image you choose(the eye dropper thingy, left click sets fore, right click sets background). Select the color replacer, then go to the tool options window and set the tolerance to about 12 or so. Then just double click and you have snow. If you want more snow increase the tolerance. Best Regards
Hobart

Sniper, that was beautiful.
Even up here north of the 49th I heard people sing with you, it could have been the cat, but she thinks she is people too, comes to dinner when we are.
The sad part is that I just lost V5. I treid to take it out of route control and then looked for it high and low. It is gone. But you said about V6, so I might wait for that.
Thanks for a great route, it even made me do a few activs.
Keep it up.

RE: BUY AMERICAN!!!!!!!

Well, this one woke some people up, hey? Yeah, I have a lot of fun with silly stuff like this, and it's a great safety valve. The few people around here that blow their tops on occasion generally do so because they take themselves too seriously, if you blow off steam periodically you'll never blow up.Yeah, Trouble, it's always either too hot or too cold in Chi-town, seems like there's too few days of just right.Oztracks, us Yankee Doodles are careless about a lot of things, abusing and misspelling the Queen's English is one of them. "Freedom" should correctly be "freedumb", meaning we're free to be as dumb as we wanna be!John, I usually use the wink, tongue, or the new clown (my favorite!) . Almost a neccessity sometimes, altho guys like me need a "I'm serious" smiley for the rare times we aren't kidding around, that would save time! "some days you're the pigeon, and other days you're the statue!", that would be a cool one too, pigeon icon and statue with pigeons icon, never get it past the censors tho. Good one, Larry! BTW, that wasn't howling dogs, that was all the Aussies singing along, standing on their heads while drinking Foster's affects their voices that way.Hmmm, what else we got here, Dave, those are all from V5. I'm not expanding much, only 2 new towns, but I'm doing a complete makeover with the scenery, mostly adding more vegetation.Which brings us to you, Hobart. (Most of you can tune this out now, route developer stuff, but somebody wake Dave Klemm up again on your way out.) I'm from Chicago, where do you think I got the "Amber Waves of Grain" textures? I stole them, of course, US2farmland1.ace and US2farmland2.ace, colors, adjust, color balance, then slide the yellow up a lot and the red up a little. I think you misunderstood my comment in the other post about making decent looking snow textures, I was talking about on buildings, everything I do on those looks like white spray paint rather than snow. I could do the color replacer brush for terrtex files, but since I'm a fanatic about efficiency in packaging (one new guy once commented that he passed by PO&N5 at first since he figured at only 3.5 megs it couldn't be much of a route, so that can backfire on ya!), I figure snow covered is snow covered, so I "steal" default snow textures from default routes instead of including custom snow textures in the zip. (Look at the bottom lines in instalpo5.bat, copying \USA2\Terrtex\Snow\US2farmland1.ace to \Terrtex\Snow\Amber1.ace, for example.) Even with that kind of slick trick PO&N6 is gonna balloon up to 8 megs or so unless I can figure out some more tricks to put it on a diet.
Good example:Buy American! – image 35
I've been screwing around trying to make weed regions, which I finally got looking the way I wanted, and uploaded them (weeds.zip, scenery objects section). A forest region defaults to ESD 252, all seasons and snow textures, so what I did was make 5 different weeds and a single snow texture for all five that gets copied to all five in \Snow, \Wintersnow, \Springsnow, and \Autumnsnow, and the base texture gets copied to \Autumn, \Spring, and \Winter. As installed it's still 2.72 megabytes, if I use the same lines from the batch file I included with weeds.zip in the install batch for the route, and delete all the files in the subfolders before packaging like I described in the File_ID.diz for weeds, I can chop that down from 2.72 megs to 364kb.Well, that's enough goofing off for now, back to playing Johhny Appleseed.Buy American! – image 36

Is the forest region's tree amount/sq km accurate? I set the value to 10000, but it seems to be no more than ~2000. The weeds look fine, but I wanted lots of weeds...

Hey, another country heard from, I think! You never did answer the question, Teemu, you living in Norway, Finland, or New Jersey? Come to think of it, I've been to Norway and New Jersey, and New Jersey sometimes seemed like a foreign country!
Anyway, I don't think anyone knows for sure what the max density of them things is, I just type in 9999 and it pops back to the maximum, 2000 or 5000 depending on who you're talking to. If you want more density, you have to overlap a bunch of them, and since they have the same pattern the center (or do you say "centre"?) has to be offset slightly for each additional region you place.

And why only V6 - Mr Garber is in the throes of the next 2 versions (so he said in another thread) - but that could indicate schizophrenia.Bill

LAST EDITED ON Aug-08-02 AT 04:07 PM (EDT)

I'm assuming by the statement "we're the people who gave you the bloody kickstart in the first place" means this guy is a Brit, the land of Monty Python, so possibly that was humor (or do you say "humour"?) that was so subtle we missed the punch line. I think the tipoff is "WE'RE not the ones trying to subvert all other cultures and turn sovreign countries into VASSAL states.", considering the fact that Britain spent a few hundred years building an empire of colonies, of which this was one. No slam on Britain, everybody was trying to do it back then, Britannia just ruled the waves and was able to do it better than anyone else.
On the other hand, he could be serious because my humor was too subtle for him, and he took offense at this. If that's the case, tough stough. Don't like it, don't have to read it.
As far as Garber's compulsion to update frequently, here's the explanation copied from another thread:Leaves his reefers sitting around on abandoned sidings for months on end, the compressors ain't running, the stuff ferments and drips all over the tracks causing weeds to grow up all around the cars.Buy American! – image 37
Then he drinks this deadly combination of pineapple wine and root beer, the next thing you know police all across Ohio are roping off crime scenes where a cryptic message is always written in lipstick on the bathroom mirror:

Whoa again - he's a Kiwi (New Zealander) at least that is what it says in his profile. Us Brits (at least most of us) are happy and proud to be associated with the USA. When you get down to that part of the world there is little to do apart from look at the scenery and get friendly with sheep (or so all my relations in New Zealand assure me).And as for Adele Stevens - having peeped at the various websites about her (and blushed at what I saw) all I can do is repeat my dear Mother's words 'if she doesn't put more clothes on she will get a nasty chill' Bill

RE: AMERICAN!!!!!!! (Bah! Humbug!)

hehe. You've ruffled a few oil-covered British feathers there, Sniper! You should know that us Brits have no sense of humour - I mean, have you seen our comedies on telly? Nightmare, the lot of'em. Give me Friends, Will and Grace, Frasier and Seinfeld any day. And Cheers of course, which rules above all else. Naturally.I consider myself to be a Brit with a sense of humour, albeit warped, thus making oneself the exception to the aforementioned rule. Thus, I will be able to say, with all tongue inserted firmly in cheek, that whilst we once did indeed 'rule the waves', we did it through skill and conquest, rather than doing it in a sinister and covert way by implanting horrific clowns in fastfood restaurants, selling such delights as undercooked beefburgers and fries (read chips in good old Angleterre) to an increasing moronic and oversized population. Snigger.Anyway, as for who Adele Stephens is, well, she used to be a model who specialised in wearing very little so that her awesome breasts and ass were given full exposure. This of course then developed into doing nude and lesbian photoshoots and now, well, let us say she has gone on to 'harder' things. Over here in Britannia we are a bit prudish about such things, so of course I would never admit to looking at her in such a fashion, if anyone asks. However, over in your enlightened US shores, I would fully encourage you to take a peek via the google search engine. Trains may pale into insignificance..... FatController

RE: AMERICAN!!!!!!! (Bah! Humbug!)

What is it with socialists that don't allow them to have a sense of humor (or is it humour)? As for subverting other countries, what is wrong with exporting freedom and democracy? I love how these people in tin pot countries rip America up and down and then expect us to bail their sorry asses out after a major disaster or civil war. As for slaughtering the native people, that was a different time and those natives did some slaughtering of their own. As for your "gracioiuslly allowed you independence and sovereigncy", who saved your bacon in World War II? I can appreciate humor and sarcasm, but since Sept. 11, I don't take kindly to any attacks against my country. So take your facist ideals comment and stuff it up your kiwi ass!

Songs

Your use of silly songs will not help you. Listen to this:GOD OF NATIONS AT THY FEET, IN THE BONDS OF LOVE WE MEET. HEAR OUR VOICES WE ENTREAT, GOD DEFEND OUR FREE LAND.
GUARD PACIFICS' TRIPLE STAR, FROM THE SHAFTS OF STRIFE AND WAR.
MAKE HER PHRASES HEARED AFAR,
GOD DEFEND NEW ZEALAND. (One of NZ's National anthems.)Take that!!
and THIS:GOD SAVE OUR GRACIOUS QUEEN, LONG LIVE OUR NOBLE QUEEN, GOD SAVE THE QUEEN.
SEND HER VICTORIOUS, HAPPY AND GLORIOUS, LONG TO REIGN OVER US.
GOD SAVE THE QUEEN. (The other one.)

If anything needs guarding in Kiwi-land it's the America's Cup...we're comin' to take it back real soon (sending Conner's submarine to get it ) ...better put your dogs on it...oh yeah, and we'd really like it back without the dents please! CharlieB (that's Captain Charlie to you)
Newport, Rhode Island, USAps: For all you landsmen, the Cup is called the America's Cup because we sent *one* schooner (the AMERICA) to meet the *entire* British yachting fleet at the Isle of Wight back in 1851 and wumped them good. As one of the British lords is quoted as saying to Queen Victoria, "Madam, there is no second." We kept the Cup from all comers for 132 years, until that Aussie from Perth "cheated" and designed a faster boat. That's 25 successful defences and the longest running winning streak in the history of sports.See http://www.americascup.com/history.aspx for more history of the Cup.

RE: Songs

Yes exactly...just a laugh, but I guess I'll have to explain it to the landsmen out there. The America's Cup stuff used to be fun 20 years ago, when I was involved, with a lot of good-natured jostling among the competitors. Now that BIG BUSINESS and SPONSORSHIP and ESPN have gotten involved, it has become deadly serious. It was in the older, good-natured spirit that I offerred my comments. As proof, I point to my comment about "Conner's submarine". Dennis Conner is infamous as the U.S. skipper who lost the Cup to the Aussies back in the 80's. He has been trying to get it back ever since. Unfortunately, his latest wonder-boat (US-77) recently SANK in trial racing off San Diego; hence threatening to use "Conner's submarine" to retrieve the Cup is very tongue-in-cheek. Unfortunately, the U.S. has lost the technological edge that got us the Cup in the first place. I will admit that my remark about the dents could be a bit offensive to the Kiwis, for which I apologize. It refers to the fact that a Maori beat the hell out of the Cup with a war club a few years ago, in an effort to call attention to native issues. They have since had it repaired. Nonetheless, the Kiwis may find that event somewhat embarrassing and I regret having brought it up. Charlie

RE: BUY AMERICAN!!!!!!! (tongue-in-cheek icon???)

Hey Bow, 'wassup? Me and Rich had a silly thread going over in the route design forum a couple days ago, we really miss your upside-down nuttiness when we get into those.
As far as tongue in cheek icons, they got a new one now that I love, the clown face.
As far as big dave, I read the second post, and I'm still missing the punchline somehow. Part of his first post was misleading since New Zealand didn't "graciously grant independence" to the US, possibly this guy is confused about where he lives or something. One of two things, he's either a lousy comedian and shouldn't give up his day job, or he's an idiot studying to be a moron, and not studying very hard. Hmmm, lemmee see, no "I'm Serious About That" icon, so I gotta improvise:Buy American! – image 44That works.
Anyway, I'm gonna say what I'm gonna say, sometimes I'm serious and sometimes I'm just screwing around. Either way if it offends anyone I'm not gonna apologize, they don't like it they can go piss up a rope.

By the by, your suggestion of urinating up a length of rope is impossible, gravametricly (don't ask.)And Finally (Monty Python Alert) "I WAVE MY PRIVATE PARTS AT YOUR AUNTIES, YOU CHEESY-LOVER, SECOND-HAND ELECTION, DONKEY-BOTTOM-BITERS!!!! AND IF YOU DO NOT GO AWAY I SHALL INSULT YOU AGAIN!!!!"

Sniper,Great rendition of America The Beautiful! The Brits did give us a couple of other comedies along with Monty Python: Keeping Up Appearances (Hyacinth Bucket!), Are You Being Served, and As Time Goes By (Judy Dench). All excellent shows that we watch over and over. We have even taught out 2 year old grand daughter how to do the Queen's Wave (screwing in the light bulb!)This was an excellent thread. We all need some levity once in a while.

In some countries the legal definition of death is when the brain has totally ceased to function. Which would mean that George W would be legally classified as an organ bank.....

Hey all. Since almost all of my reply's seem to end all threads, lets see if this happens. In my humble opinion, the best comedy coming from that cold and damp island has got to be Benny Hill. They showed re-runs a long time ago. Its about time to run them again.Dejoh
