Terrible shooting in Alberta – image 1

Four members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were killed today in a shooting near a small town in Albeta, north of Edmonton. I believe it's the worst loss of life in the RCMP at one time since the 1800's. Ernie http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2005/03/03/alberta-shooting050303.html

Bah, curse these drug types. From that story, it appears that they managed to take one of the bad guys with 'em; hopefully that's just a start to the RCMP getting even.I can't abide the murder of law enforcement officers.

Yeah, that's insane. It sounds like something that happens in Colombia. That 4 people had to die over pot growing is just nuts.

I wonder what they mean by "high powered rifle"? At this point, I'm guessing a self-loading deer rifle like the Remington 7400, chambered for .308 or .30-06. That'll easily defeat the standard Level II kevlar vests worn by most officers (those are only good against pistol rounds and buckshot)The most likely chain of events now is: The guy killed the first two officers when they went to his place concerning stolen auto parts, then after they failed to report in, two more officers were sent to investigate and were also shot.Jonathan Nikiforovs.

One news report I read says the weapon was a "Heckler and Koch .308cal rifle", so it's probably an HK91, a semi-auto version of the G3A3 battle rifle (from a stanpoint of lethality, it's in the same class as the self-loading deer rifle I mentioned). What I don't understand is, this guy was an obvious psycho who was feared and loathed in the community (including his own parents), plus he had numerous other crimes to his name, including assault with a firearm, and at least one run-in with the cops, which would have prevented him from legally owning such a rifle (many semi-auto versions of military rifles, such as the AR15, can be legally owned in Canada, but with stringent restrictions: basically you can't own one unless you have a clean record). How the hell did he get away clean so long?Jonathan Nikiforovs.

Who said he owned it legally? That is the problem with the world now days. Ooooh guns are "bad" or guns "kill" people, both of these statements are false.
If the firearm restrictions were relaxed a bit there would be less problems, this is a documented fact.

>Who said he owned it legally?Eh? that's not what I meant. Allow me to rephrase: Quite simply, this man had a criminal record, including assault with a firearm, an offence which automatically bans one from legally owning any firearm in Canada: ergo, every weapon he owned was by definition illegal. The thing is, he had been a recurring problem for the cops, he was feared and loathed by the entire community, and everyone in the area knew he had an "arsenal" of weapons on his property. What I'm confused about is, in light of his obvious offences, why was nothing done about him earlier?Jonathan Nikiforovs.

A really good question, something I hope will come out in the investigation. This is a horrible tradgedy, the RCMP have to figure out what went wrong and how a similar situation can be best avoided in the future.

But if the cops knew this, why didn't they go in with some "heavy hardware" themselves? FALs, C8s or something?

RE: Terrible shooting in Alberta

In the line of Duty-
This is the largest loss of life the Royal Canadian Mounted Police has faced in 120 years. My heart goes out to Cst. Peter Shiemann, Cst. Lionide Johnston, Cst. Anthony Gordon and Cst. Brock Myrol, and their families. From what I got from the media is that the members went to raid a house in Mayerthorpe, Al. and the man ambushed them. I think the paper said one of the officers who got there after the initial shooting shot the man, but a self inflicted gunshot wound ended his life. This has hit me hard, because I have always wanted to be a mountie and I know a lot of members.
Well, good evening, Morgan
