Punk Oi ~~~*God Save The Queen* – image 1

Surely I can't be the only punk head here?
C'mon, who else loves the Ramones, the Dead Kennedys, The Clash and Sex Pistols?Zombina and the Skeletons?Aus Rotten?S.O.I.A.?The AKAs?I tell you some of the things I really like about punk. Alot of it, esspecially the real early punk rock (aka early Ramones) was greatly influenced by 50s-60s rock n roll. You know, the fun music. The stuff that makes you want to get up and dance and not care what anybody says. Anybody remember the remake of "Surfin' Bird" by the Ramones, originally by the Trashmen? I mean jeeze, the song is totally pointless, but yet it's refreshing. You don't have to worry about some political message within, just rock out........anyone who reads up knows that Joey Ramone was a helpless romantic, who wrote all of the love songs **which were quite innocent for a punk band** for the Ramones. Then you have songs like "Police Truck" by the Dead Kennedys. It's nasty, it's fast, and it's loud and or obnoxious.
Alot of punk is politically based. Take the disbanded "Aus Rotten". They had songs about anti-sex discrimination, and lots of songs that were against various government issues.A personal political favorite for me is "Nazi Punks **** Off!" by the Dead Kennedys. Read the lyrics sometime. You have to be crazy to not agree with some of what they're saying!.
All in all, I hate getting all wrapped up about politics in my music, althogh I can see it as something to add to the music, and allow it so that people who might otherwise not be interested become involved due to the politically charged message....It's too bad that it would interfere with safety around trains, because otherwise, I'd have a huge mohawk, died purple held up with Liquid Nails -Jeffrey

Speaking of the Marines, I tried to join up in '89, but I was too tall. The general for Marine Recruiting happened to be there that day and told the recruiter that my test scores justified making an allowance to the rule.
Well I was on my way until some doctor in Oakland found some other so called problem.
Still bums me out to this day, oh well.Regards,

Chuck, self mutilation? you're thinking of goth music.
Easy way to tell the three types of music in this genre:EMO: I hate my life and I want to die.PUNK: I hate your life, and you should die.SKA: I hate my life, and you should die, but let's dance in circles together and be happy about it.
Easy enough.-Jeffrey

I was never into the old school punk.I was big into the "alternative scene",in the '80s long before that name was coined.Bands like Fugazi,Minor Threat,The Descendents,Dag Nasty,Ludichrist and a few others.

I actually prefer to listen to Industrial and some Gothic (never into self mutalation either, although I do love to get tattoos). Skinny Puppy, old Cure (1980s), Bahaus, Sisters of Mercy,
Switchblade Symphony, old Love & Rockets (1980s), Die Form,
Die Krupps, Leaether Strip, Front Line Assembly, and KMFDM to name a few.

Oh, I was crazy about punk and new wave. I still have some lp's
stashed somewhere here... Richard Hell, Holly and the Italians were two of the more obscure names that come to mind right now. I was buyin reggae at the time too.... It was a great time for music.Got the collection from Rounder Records? GBH, Verbal Abuse, Husker Du, Black Flag (before Henry Rollins mainstreamed them)... Plus I like industrial, like Throbbing Gristle, Skinny Puppy, oHGr, Damage Manual, Ministry, etc...I also have a soft spot for 80's synth pop. (aka New Wave)-Jeff

Chuck, I'm with you on this. I quit buying CD's years ago. This stuff they play now isn't music. All it is is who can make the loudest racket and yell the most.Tha last singer I liked was Sheryl Crowe and yes, I did buy her album. The rest of this stuff makes my ears hurt.(Yes, I'm getting to sound like an old geezer!)Larry Steiner

I don't suffer from insanity; I enjoy every minute of it!

Simple answer Chuck: Nothing. Well 'cept Neil Diamond. The other two are great. The deal with punk is that by the end of the 70's you had people asking themselves what's with all these pretentious rock operas? Rock w/Violins? Disco? All the other smary stuff? What happened to your basic 3 chord rock 'n roll? And so Punk/New Wave tried to go back to the roots of it all.It was an attempt to provide some honest music, unlike all the commercial/corporate stuff on the radio which had to be bland enough to pass by some playlist evaluator asking "would this music offend 12-13 year old girls?".And in 18 months punk had settled down into New Wave and in less than 4, maybe 5 years, it too was gone, with many bands having moved into the mainstream over that period, bands like Bob Geldorf's Boomtown Rats, The Pretenders, Iggy Pop, Elvis Costello, Blondie, etc., bands that got airtime. But in the early days, 78-80, a whole bunch of these bands were really just raw garage bands... on the way back to the roots, they overshot the landing zone so to speak, but hey, that was fun too.You mentioned Hendrix: You really, really have to find and listen to Patti Smith's cover of Hey Joe. All I can say is WOW! And if you want a nicee example of the 3 chord tune, find a tune called _Blizkrieg Bop_.Dave Nelson, SLW Designer, Cal-P Route Punk Oi ~~~*God Save The Queen* – image 16Punk Oi ~~~*God Save The Queen* – image 17

I'm with Dave on this one.Not a big Neil fan, but there's nothing wrong with Bruce or Jimi. I used to be a recording engineer and have a pretty wide range of musical tastes. I listen to anything but country, rap, and opera. And when I say country, I mean modern pop/country. Your Brooks and Dunn or Garth Brooks type stuff. I like country western just fine. That's 'cause all the rest are not real singers.... FWIW, Diamond was trained as a classical cantor in the Jewish tradition and IIRC was his father... That means he was really good at singing a Capella (read can carry a tune and read music)....
No fancy electronics needed there....Tom Jones and Englebert Humperdink in the Welsh tradition were also classically trained vocalists.... BTW, my wife loved them....Also you must be at least 10 years younger than me....My all time favorite 2 songs from my salad days were "I want to kiss you all over!" and the top country song of my youth "If I told you, you have a beautiful body would you hold it against me?"....
P.S. I was a sailor you know...
What did you expect, La Boheme(sp)????

Actually my musical tastes are all over the place.I listened to the stuff posted above back in the 80's and 90's.Along with Iron Maiden,Slayer,Motorhead,Metallica, etc. But my favorite music has always been early metal and prog rock like Hendrix,Deep Purple,Led Zep,Jethro Tull,King Crimson,ELP,Yes,Sabbath etc.I also love Jazz-Fusion.If you want to hear some intense music check out The Mahavishnu Orchestra.Especially the albums "Birds of Fire" and "Visions of the Emerald Beyond".That's some of the best instrumental music you will ever hear.

60-70-80's had the best music, hands down. Todays music, as pointed out above, shouldn't even be called music.

Well, I don't really know if I'm "punk" so much as I just enjoy good rock. Iron Maiden, you pwn me. I also enjoy trancey stuff like Boards of Canada, or a bit of Aphex Twin... though thats more techno that last one.I also enjoy Ozzy, the Crue... I think I'm living in the 80's a lot of the time. BTW, I like your defintion of punk vs goth vs ska... very accurate I don't really like emo's or goth's. Skaters are ok, nice people to chill with. Goths are too "omg liek lets totally kill a cat and hang it in an old oak tree while we mutilate our arms and become witchez lol!1" Mind you, lots of respect for true wiccans. Then there's emo's... which are pretty much the same as goths, except they don't show their depression. Instead its "oh woe is me".Ah society's labels. I've come to know them so well.
