Isn't it about time we just deported the focus groups that gave

Hmmm....I remember a Simpsons episode that addresses this subject.

This is an excellent example of why copyright law is totally screwed right now. The law that was in place when these characters were first created provided protection for 28 years, plus a single 28 year extention if requested. That would mean these characters would be moving into the public domain right about now. BTW, fully 85% of all copyrighted works (over 90% for written works) did not request the extension. The purpose of having stuff move into the public domain was in part to let old stuff get reused by whomever wanted it and in part to incite the owner to create something new insterad of recycling old stuff.Instead of that what we have today is a system where copyright holds for darn near 100 years and owners have no incentive whatsoever to actually create anything new. OTOH the have a huge incentive to extend and derive from the original, no matter how lame, because they can. Further, the law locks up a huge amount of creative works as copyright-orphans: works under protection (for decades more) who have no known owner yet cannot be made use of by the public. We got into thisa mess with thanks to the Disney Corp. who, having failed to create anything new for 20+ years, realized that when Micky Mouse was about to enter the public domain that they had better bribe, ahh, persuade the Congress to change the law in order to save their bacon. A decade later the eminent legal authority Sony Bono, R. California, in the belief that copyright should be forever, changed it again.Final thought: consider that life saving drugs have patent protection for about 20 years (and that's from discovery not first sale to doctors, which may be 7-10 years later). Yet a photograph of a bug is protected for the life of the photographer plus 75 years. Is a photo of a bug deserving 5 times the protection? I sure don't think so.We have a fiasco on our hands right now and the latest examples are these Looney Tunes.Dave Nelson, SLW Designer, Cal-P Route Warner is making over Looney Tunes characters – image 19Warner is making over Looney Tunes characters – image 20

I think the the Bono Act passed because there was no lobby to defend the benefits of public domain. Unfortunately, the Supreme court upheld the act in Eldredge vs. Ashcroft. I've heard there is a new legal challenge, but I'm not clear on how it differs from the Eldredge case.

Yeah, the Eldridge case was a real blow. Reading Justice Bryer's dissent really brought home to me how foolish the law is. But stupidity was not unconstitutional according to the majority opinion. The latest news is that the Copyright Office has opened up to public inputs the question of how to deal with orphan works. You can follow the issues at http://eldred.cc/ and IIRC there is a link there to the Copyright Office's own concerns about orphan works.Dave Nelson, SLW Designer, Cal-P Route Warner is making over Looney Tunes characters – image 23Warner is making over Looney Tunes characters – image 24

RE: Warner is making over Looney Tunes characters

WTF? I watch Boomerang( Direct TV ) and watch the old cartoons all the time, especialy if i just woke up and start my day slow, i just pop on the cartoons. What they have done with all the older cartoons is sickening, but this is the worst yet. Why ruin something that people have liked for over 50 years. Alec
