10 grand is pocket change for the Bushites and their ilk. Dont know if you heard or not, but earlier on the news today, Michael Schumacher put up 10 million of his own cash for the relief effort, Applaud HIM!

I'm sure that 10 mil is the same as 10 grand to Schumacher. My problem is who do I donate to?Who can I trust to actually get the aid to where it's needed? How can I be sure that my donation doesn't end up in a charity exec's or a corrupt foreign leaders pocket? You can't trust any UN charities. The Red Cross lost all credibility after 9/11 for me.Many of my friends, family and co-workers feel the same way.

RE: Wow, a VERY generous donation.

There is one UN Charity which is not nearly as corrupted as for example the World Food Programme, and that is UNICEF, The childrens relief fund of the UN. They are so cash-strapped that the culture of greed that developed in other agencies never had a chance there. Thats the organisation that will get my money. What do you mean about the Red Cross loosing all credibility after 9/11?

Not American, don't like Bush, but here's my 2 penny worth anyway...Two words. PUBLICITY STUNT! He's one of the richest men on the planet and all he can afford to give is $10000? Add a few more zeros, I might be impressed, but...

RE: Wow, a VERY generous donation.

Actually, the Bushes aren't that rich. They're doing pretty well, but they're nowhere near in the league of Gates, the Walton (Walmart) gang, the Sultan of Brunei, etc. It may be a publicity stunt, but so what. It's $10,000 going to a good cause. I'm no Bush fan, either, but he's given $10k more than a lot of folks will give, even when they can afford to do so.Andy

Not to sound blunt but before you start accusing someones generosity of being a publicity stunt(btw the POTUS can't take a dump without someone being aware of it so the secret donation is most likely out)I'd like to ask how much have you contributed to the cause?
I'm not going to say how much my wife and myself donated but suffice to say somewhere between US Grant and Ben Franklin and all told the Chicago area yesterday generated 1.7 mill in one day for the American Red Cross International disater fund,I'd forgotten about the ARC's track record but still trust them more than the UN(Koffi's kid don't need another new Lambo)Gary S

> Two words. PUBLICITY STUNT! He's one of the richest men on the planet.... Two words: B.S.The Bushes gross worth is large by middle income standards but by no means are they one of the richest on earth. I doubt their gross worth exceeds $50m.For yuks, here's the Bushes 2003 Federal Income Tax return -- in full: <<http://www.taxhistory.org/thp/presreturns.nsf/Returns/43394514D22A89F185256E750075F0F4/$file/bush03.pdf>>Their income is about twice what John Kerry's income is. And if you want to see somebody that might actually qualify as rather rich -- but still not one of the richest -- here is Mrs. Kerry's income tax return from 2003: <<http://www.taxhistory.org/thp/presreturns.nsf/Returns/E2DF8209BA59B45485256F310077A3DF/$file/101504_thk_tax_filing.pdf>> And please note that the $$ on line 8b is tax free because it's all from holding Federal Bonds -- a true value roughly 15-20 times the amount shown.

RE: Wow, a VERY generous donation.

We gave through UMCOR - the United Methodist Committee on Relief. Their "official" administration rate is 0%, because their operating expenses are paid from funds given by the individual churches, rather than from donations to the charity. Their practice is to provide the full amount of a donation to the problem area. By way of full and open disclosure, the Council of Better Business Bureaus did receive some complaints about how UMCOR distributed funds for 9/11 families and survivors. You can see the response here. If you're satisfied with that, you can get to UMCOR here. Andy

Really though, this has turned into a let's bash the US event. At least 150,000 are dead, but it's a pissing contest on who can give more.It has nothing to do with actually doing something.Everyone must remember,US support here is open ended. It takes a lot more than cash to pull this relief effort off.And the US aid coming from the military probably won't be tallied into the total. It's what Americans do,jump in 110% to help. But don't offend the Tamil Tigers or any other islamic fundamentalists with your US aid!The Sri Lankan gov't and Indonesia should be ashamed.A few Marines aren't scared of all the terrorists you could throw at them.Let them help on the ground! These Marines could do so much.http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,1280,-4710757,00.html
