Believe it or not there are two new versions of this film coming out this year. One is by Speilberg (with Tom Cruise) and looks like it may be based on the TV series (Yuck!). The trailer is pretty spooky but doesn't show much.<www.waroftheworlds.com>The other is already in post production by a company called PenDragon and will come out first. It is a film adaptation of the original 1898 book by H.G.Wells. It is also set in the time period of the original story (unlike all the other stuff).<http://www.pendragonpictures.com/WOTWKEY.html>Since it's one of my favorite books of all time I'm looking forward to seeing done the "right" way...Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century!

At one time, I had a full copy of the original radio broadcast by Orson Wells, back in 1938-I believe.
Story has it that it created a bit of local mass hysteria.Edit 1: Yep! I just checked. The broadcast was on Halloween Night-Oct. 30th, 1938

Oh, come on! The 1980s syndicated series was nifty, at least for the first season or so. The whole set-up of the story, from the "invasion that time forgot" to the aliens and their particularly possessive ways made it interesting. That's another series that I wish was out on DVD. Heck, V in its various iterations and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century came out, so maybe all I've got to do is bide my time. However, I don't have any confidence in either Tom Cruise or Steven Spielberg to deliver the creepiness, paranoia, or visceral feel of the original series.Did the Alan Moore/Kevin O'Neill adaptation of the H.G. Wells story into their League of Extraordinary Gentlemen universe ever come out? If they kept the standards of the first LOEG series, then it's probably worth reading.

The Victorian version sounds interesting. Many years ago I read a rather entertaining sequel - "The Second War of the Worlds" by George H Smith. The Martians were invading a parallel Victorian Earth.

RE: War of the Worlds

I went to look at the new trailer yesterday, but they delyed it for editing...Seems they thought the scenes of the boiling wave at Weybridge would be too poignant after the tsunami. The fact that Weybridge is even in the movie says a lot about the film. For the unfamiliar, Weybridge is one of the few places in the story where the Martians suffer anything resembling a defeat. One of the fighting machines is decapitated by cannon fire and falls into the river. The hero of the story and other people who ran to the river to get away from the Martians get hit by the resulting wave of scalding hot water. It should be interesting to see how they do other parts of the book like Woking Common, the Thunder Child, and London."The chances against anything manlike on Mars are a million to one"

RE: War of the Worlds

I must admit, using Jeff waynes soundtrack with Richard Burton Narrating would have made for a superb movie!I believe they were going to do this a while back but it never came to fruition- shame really. Will be interesting to see both versions though.Tim CWar of the Worlds – image 11
