Andy Good goshamighty I've caught some of the vid on this and it's just horrendous with the loss of life. I have heard some of the eco goofs trying to pin this on global warming, it just disgusts me, come on we're rapidly approaching the 100K mark in the death toll from just the wave alone and these A holes look at all this tradgedy and suffering and figure "What a great time to pimp my pet cause." just repulsive.Gary S

You said it PERFECTLY!!!!I mean, what do geological Events have to do with global warming????By the way, I've heard that Sumatra (or rather the mini-plate it is on) has moved a respectable distance as a result of the quake. Does anyone have any information on that?
"Damn the torpeodoes- Four bells Captain Drayton" - Admiral Farragut aboard USS Harford during the Battle of Mobile Bay, August 5th 1864.
Here's an article on the movement of Sumatra, and the possible shifting of the Earth's axis because of the quake:http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,3-1418302,00.htmlThere was also an interesting editorial in the NY Times (yeah, that liberal rag) that suggested that there may be some as yet unknown connection between the earthquake that hit Iran a year ago (also on 12/26 if I recall) and this one. http://www.nytimes.com/2004/12/29/opinion/29winchester.html?oref=login&hpFascinating stuff going on underneath us all, if only we knew what it was....As far as blaming it on global warming, my understanding is that the comments were actually about the possibility that slightly higher ocean levels added to the problem, not that it caused the problem. In either case, it's a non-issue here and anyone who uses this horrible event to publicize their own rant has no sense of humanity. Andy(Edit - added NYT link)
>(yeah, that liberal rag) You just offended a good deal (probably most) of New Yorkers (and many many other people), including myself. Well, I'm gonna leave this one at that because I don't want this to turn into a flame war. And please, don't bash the New York Times (which is much more legit than, say, Fox) or take a political stance when it does not pertain to the thread.

Oops. Shoulda used a smiley there. I didn't mean to bash the Times -my intent was based on my experience here in "The Yard." This forum tends to draw a fairly conservative crowd, and the Times has been characterized here as liberal, at least on political matters. I was merely trying to point out that "even the Times" publishes some very interesting perspectives that are worth reading, even if a person is not in agreement with their editorial politics.Personally, I read the on-line Times several times a week at least, and am a great fan of Tom Friedman's columns. I agree this thread in particular should not be turned into a flame war, and I apologize for the (failed) attempt at humor.Andy
