I just got a Chessie System SD40-2 from Athearn. The railings are too long and the coupler mounts do not fit on the frame. What should I do? Does any company make handrails for Athearn locos? And, whould a Kadee system work for the couplers?

If it is an older, "Blue Box" Athearn, Kadee "No 5's" work fine, you mount the coupler and brass spring INSIDE the stock Athearn coupler box, it is a match made in heaven, usually.Athearn handrails are a pain, it helps to use a small drill bit to SLIGHTLY ENLARGE the holes, to fit "more properly" just take your time with it Andy J Athearn Trouble – image 1 http://www.blueridgerails.com/

Yep, and I usually put a drop or two of cement on the ends to keep them in the holes firmly.

RE: Athearn Trouble

Its not that theyre a pain to get in, its that theyre too long. I think if you put on the sides theres a 1/8 in overhang and it looks stupid to bend them.

There's nothing wrong with those parts you've got there. The side handrails will sit properly once you install the stantions on there.
The end handrails are supposed to be like that, you have to mount and install the stantions first.DanEveryone is entitled to their opinion no matter how wrong it is.

The end railings use the "short" stanchions provided in the Athearn parts bag. the left side railings will use long and short stanchions. This really isn't too hard if you read the directions in the box

RE: Athearn Trouble

>I guess it was new. The box was worn but all the parts were
>still in the package. Nick, all the newer Athearn SD40-2's come with both metal and
delrin railings now, get your hobby shop to order you some delrin
ones they are one piece and easy to install and not expensive.
They come molded in the correct colors and are closer to
scale size, the metal ones are over size.
Here's the part numbers, i'am not sure what color you require.
140-64030 Black
140-64031 BN Green
140-64032 UP Gray
140-64033 Mopac Blue
140-64034 CSX Gray
140-64036 White Also the newer version of the SD40-2's come with coupler boxes
and screws so you just drop in a Kadee #5 coupler and spring in the supplied box tighten up the screw and your done.
If it's the older drive you will have to do a bit of filing and
drill a hole and tap for 2-56 screw and use Kadee # 7 to get the
correct height.Hope this helps.Later!

RE: Athearn Trouble

I was wondering when they started doing that because my Grand Trunk SD40 I got today had those plastic railings and I think they look goooood.
