This morning,a massive submarine earthquake shook the indonesian island of Sumatra. The earthquake, measuring 8.9 on the richter scale, is the largest one to hit earth for 40 years!Tsunamis triggered by this earthquake devastated large areas of Indonesia, India, Thailand, the Maldives, and Bangladesh. Witnesses in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, stated that the tidal wave measured 40 Feet when it reached the coast, and swept almost half a mile inland. Local authorities in Colombo have confirmed that 1500 people have died in their country alone, altough the numbers could rise to 2000 as more information rolls in. In neighbouring India, over 1000 people are presumed to have died because of the Tsunami. In Thailand, the Island of Phiphi is still unreachable after the wave struck it. Authorities there report an additional 200 fatalities. Resorts in nearby Phuket have been devastated, and the Laguna Beach Resort is completely gone! In the indonesian province of Aceh, on the Island of Sumatra 750 people are estimated to be dead as a result of the earthquake and the resulting tidal waves.http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/asiapcf/12/26/asia.quake/index.htmlhttp://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqinthenews/2004/usslav/http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/4125481.stm

Struck me as pretty horrible. I was lolling on the beach in Phuket on R&R from Vietnam back in 1970, so the story made an impression on me.Pray for their souls, be you Christian, Jewish, Muslim or Buddhist.PaulSMassive Submarine Earthquake and Tsunami in South-East – image 1

12'200 according to BBC as of 0100 GMT. It is certainly horrific!!!! There was an earthquake off the coast of Tasmania about 5 days ago. It was a horizontal shift in the plates, where as the one in South East Asia was a vertical shift in the plates, which tragically resulted in the tsunami's. How do these fit together?? They are both on the Indo-Australius plate which makes up the southern half of "The Ring of Fire".>Mike Forster<

USGS has it as a 9.0 now, was at 8.9 earlier. also notice they've gotten no aftershocks less than 5.4

RE: Massive Submarine Earthquake and Tsunami in South-E

There are a couple of things that make this terrible tragedy a bit sadder for me...1) It seemed that CNN didn't care to make this a top story until the death toll reached about 10,000. Before that it was just another news byte that came before the Ukranian elections.2) While there was little or no time to save anyone in immediate vicinity of the quake, the tsunami's that hit the coast of India and Shri Lanka took several hours to arrive. There was ample time to issue warnings. Unfortuantely there isn't any process currently in place for such a thing (at least not in that area of the world). The waves did not have to be a surprise to all those unfortunate people. I wish we'd spend less time making useless cell phone enhancements and "smart bombs" and more time on life saving technology in general. For what it's worth...Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century!

RE: Massive Submarine Earthquake and Tsunami in South-E

Agreed, if they would have had an early warning system in place, such as they have for the Pacific Ocean, I imagine many people could have been saved. Unfortunately the problem is that such earthquake induced tsunami's in the Indian Ocean rarely happen. I guess most governments in the area figured they could get by without worrying about it. Maybe now, they will change their minds.Of course as a species, we usually wait untill something bad happens before making changes that will help us, especially when lots of money is involved. Mykel

The way the numbers are going now, agand given the number of missing, I fully expect the toll to rise into the 50,000-75,000 range: This compares to another famous disaster in that region, the 1883 Krakatoa eruption which produced tsunais that killed 36,000. However, the worst death toll from a earthquake (or any seismic event) in modern times was the 1976 earthquate in Tangshen, China which claimed a minumum of 242,000 lives (though some sources believe the toll may be 3 times that)...Jonathan Nikiforovs.

The death toll is closing 60 000 now.
And still rising...I agree with those comments about the news coverage of the disaster, the same thing is happening here in Finland. 2 finns dead and over 200 missing, THAT is the news, not what happened to the locals.Of course the news are reporting what they think is most interesting, but still...
My condolences to everyone who lost someone there.

RE: Massive Submarine Earthquake and Tsunami in South-E

According to Gerhard Schröder, the german chancellor has in the meantime confirmed that 49 Germans are dead, with over 1000 still missing. In a press conference today, he stated that this new year, people should cut back on fireworks, and donate the money to aid organizations. I think that is a very good suggestion, and I for my part will do so.
