Boeing sucessfully test launches Delta IV Heavy rocket – image 1

This is CNNI like the modular concept of this rocket: essentially nothing more than 3 delta IV mediums strapped together: This should make it less expensive to manufacture than other similar-sized rockets: All and all, a fine sucessor to the Titan IV, and it should also be an excellent competitor to the ESA's Ariane 5...Jonathan Nikiforovs.

Hmmm, is it me or does this remind you of Regan "Death Star" program that he tried to start?

"The early shutdown of the Delta 4 Heavy’s propulsion system during the Boeing-built rocket’s demonstration launch Tuesday prevented three satellites on board from reaching orbit."http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/delta4hvy_update_041223.htmlIt seems there may be some bugs to work out. But that's not unusual with a new booster. I sure miss the Saturn series - remarkable record - too bad we quit making them.

Well the rocket was bound for a nearby town, due to a failure in the guidance control computer (Ariane 4 Software was loaded into the computer, instead of the appropriate Ariane 5 programs). So, self-destruction was the only logical choice. Except for the PRC. Something similar happened to one of their Long March Rockets in the same year. It DID crash into a nearby town. Casualty figures were never released.

Anyway, I've heard there are now proposals for massive versions of the delta IV that include as many as SEVEN Common Core Boosters strapped together: This configuration would be able to launch 51,000kg into LEO, vs. 21,800 for the Delta IV Heavy, 20,700kg for the UR-500K Proton, and 17,900 for the Ariane V. Of course, even that pales in comparison to the mighty Saturn V, which could lift a whopping 118,000kg into LEO...As unlikely as it may be to happen, I want to see the Saturn V fly again: it would be useful today to lift large payloads into orbit, and per pound launched into orbit, it would be cheaper to use than the "reusable" Shuttle, which has to be practially rebuilt after every flight. Also, contrary to popular belief, NASA has not lost or destroyed the Saturn V plans: The complete blueprints and manufacturing instructions for every part of the rocket are stored at the US government's National Archives and the Johnson Space Center: of course, there's the problem that the entire design would have to be revised due to advances in technolegy (i.e, the original S-V guidance computer used vacuum tubes)Jonathan Nikiforovs.
