This is CNNNot too surprised: it was really suspicious that he'd be afflicted by this just in time for the election: Right now Yunukovych or Kuchma are oviously the most likely suspects, but frankly I wouldn't be surprised if Czar Putin is complicit.Jonathan Nikiforovs. Milepost 180, CP Belleville Sub.

It's horrible what happened to his face. I read the skin will eventually recover, at least somewhat, but it will take a very long time.Dave NelsonWP mainline, Oakland-Stockton: 100% complete; SP mainline, Oakland-Stockton: 20% complete; Aug 1950 <<new .sig under construction>>
I don't know, maybe he planned this for his own political gains. Afterall, you would think if someone were going to poison a political rival, they would use more effective methods. Especially if the former KGB were involved.Of course we will probably never know for certain so can only speculate at this point.Mykel
Mykel,Probably just some political cranks. Remember the ricin in the Japanese subway? And Tim McVey blowing up the Murrah Federal Building with some easily obtainable agricultural ammonia and diesel fuel? Spanish train bombings..., the list goes on and on.The world is a pretty scary place todayPaulS
>I don't know, maybe he planned this for his own political gains.I doubt it: you know how badly this screwed him up? while campaigning, he had to have an IV pumping painkillers directly into his spine at all times, and he could easily have died when he first took ill from the poisoning. The recent exam showed dioxin levels in his body were 1000x normal: if they'd been much higher, it could have killed him. They say his face will eventually return to normal now that most of the dioxin has been filtered out of his system, but he's going to be left with nasty health problems for the rest of his life.Jonathan Nikiforovs. Milepost 180, CP Belleville Sub.

I wouldn't put anything past Vladimir Putin's government. The KGB in the 1970s wasn't above poisoning people, but their efforts weren't entirely effective. A former KGB general with knowledge of the KGB's ricin poisoning plots in the 1970s, Oleg Kalugin, detailed their less-than-stellar attempts in his book from a few years back. Just because they're the KGB (or whatever they're calling themselves now) doesn't mean that they're going to do everything right.I'm with the rest of the bunch; I bet V.V. Putin has had more than just a passing interest in the man's health. Where Putin's hand is, nothing's too outright mean to be instantly dismissed. Of course, I'm pretty certain that no credible evidence will ever lead back to him; he's not stupid.
