RE: Strange aircraft: part 2 of 3

LAST EDITED ON Nov-27-04 AT 09:16 AM (EST)

The first Aircraft is the Hammerhead Fighter from Space: Above and beyondThe second Aircraft is Boeings entry in the JSF Competition, the X-32. AS we all know, Boeing lost the JSF Contract to Lockheeds X35 proposal. The third design was the french answer to the S/VTOL debate in the late fifties and early sixties. I think the correct name was Coleoptere. It was later abandoned in favor of the very successful Mirage series of fighters.
The fourth one is a russian Ekranoplan or Surface Effect Aircraft. Affectionately known as the "Caspian Sea Monster", it was designed to quickly transport troops over vast stretches of ocean in order to support an invasion.
The fifth one is a Grumman OV-1 Mohawk. It was originally designed to be a ground support aircraft for the US Army, but inter-service arguments led to it only being used as a FAC (Forward Air Controller) Aircraft, and for COIN (Counter Insurgency) and ELINT (Electronic Intelligence) missions.
I never knew the navy had those things as well.WHAT THE HELL is the last one??? *scratches his head*

"Damn the torpeodoes- Four bells Captain Drayton" - Admiral Farragut aboard USS Harford during the Battle of Mobile Bay, August 5th 1864.

Very true info on the Caspian Sea Monster,But he is flying it way too high. While it was considered an aircraft it only flew a few feet above the water.I dont believe they flew higher than 20 ftor so above the water. Great craft though.
