>The Topol-MExcept the Topol-M (which actually entered service in 1998) isn't what Putin was taliking about: From what I hear, the current plans call for a missile that has a capacity of 10 warheads and a payload weight of 4.4 tons: By comparison, the Topol-M has a single warhead, a payload weight of 1.3 tons, and a launch weight of 47 tons. The new missile is apparently intended to serve alongside the Topol-MThe new missile seems to be a sucessor to the SS-24 "Scalpel" (RT-23 Molodets), which is similar to the LGM-118 Peacekeeper, having a 10 warhead capacity, a payload weight of 4.1 tons, and a launch weight of 105 tons. The thing about the SS-24 is, Russia had to scrap all of them and can't build any more, because virtually all the design and production facilities for the missile were located in the Ukraine and were dismantled after the fall of the USSR.Jonathan Nikiforovs.

RE: Russia to develop new ICBM

I seriously doubt there is much to worry about with Russia and their new missle. Most of this is for inner political control (keeping the old hardliners in check and happy) and to remind other countries that Russia is still a force to reckon with.
The biggest threat for anything nuclear happening is with the Korea's, India and Pakistan.Mykel

Countries can be hit back, so they won't start anything. The problem is with the terrorists. We would have to pick a country, and hopefully the word is out, and countries at risk are pressuring the terrorists to behave.
