Is Gunney a vet? – image 1

LAST EDITED ON Nov-18-04 AT 05:34 PM (EST)

Me and my dad love to watch Mail Call on the History Channel, and the host of the show name is Gunney I believe. Anyways at the end of his show he always says "Semper Fi, carry on." What I want to know is, is Gunney a real veteran or does he just say that to end the show?

RE: Is Gunney a vet?

Not sure if he is veteran or not, but I thought it would be worth mentioning that he is an actor, he plays a town Sheriff (IIRC) in the movie Missippi Burning.

RE: Is Gunney a vet?

Sean
You've got it right, whenever R Lee is in Chicago he usually drops in on a local afternoon drive show and hangs out with the host and has told of how he came to acting.
Apparently Stanley Kubrick hired him as an advisor for Full Metal Jacket and one of his advisory roles was to help select the actor to play Sgt. Hartman and none of the aplicants were quite up to delivering what was deemed to be a proper respect/terror instilling USMC DI.
Kubrick then asked if R Lee would demonstrate a "proper" DI and after doing so was pulled aside and asked if he would take the part of Gun. Sgt. Hartman and the rest is as they say history.BTW in that previous post that had the links to the pics from Fallugha on page 2 apparently Gunny is making the rounds in Fallugha although as the 12" talking doll.Gary S

Do you remember the Mail Call episode where Ermey had the doll calling the Pillsbury Doughboy a "disgusting fatbody"?

>doll calling the Pillsbury Doughboy a "disgusting fatbody"? LOL yea that was funny. I like shows like Mail Call and Mythbusters. One of the reason is because they have good host. on Mythbusters Jamie adds in the seriousness while Adam is mostly for comic releif. Gunney really puts himself in his role as host of Mail Call.

Sean and Gix
A local hobby shop had one of the Gunney dolls on the shelf and a freind and myself were checking it out,as we set it back on the shelf some woman with her lil darling in tow picked it up(the box had warnings that the doll used "accurate" DI language)and as I started to warn her hit the button and got dressed down by Gunney, she turned rather red and looked about to object to store management when I finished pointing out the warning.Gary S

R.Lee's performance in Full Metal Jacket was awesome. Both my upstairs neighbor and Uncle, both Marines with Vietnam experience were blown away by it.Definitely one of my favorite movies.

RE: Is Gunney a vet?

I agree that that was one of his best movies! Can you imagine how many lawsuits the Marines would get today if DI's still instructed in that manner.
He also did a good performance as a sheriff in the remake of "Texas Chainsaw Massacre"Mykel
