Just a heads-up for anyone using Free AVG as their virus scanner. Support for V.6 will be discontinued Dec. 31, 2004. You will need to upgrade to V.7.
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/1/I installed V.7 on 10 machines today, seven worked flawlessly, three would not connect to the e-mail server. I got one to work by changing settings in Control Panel/Internet Options/Programs and changing the e-mail client from Outlook Express to Outlook. I had to revert to V.6 on the other two until I can resolve the problem. I suspect Zone Alarm, but the error was that the user name and/or password was rejected by the server.

RE: AVG V.6 Support To Be Discontinued

We had a few issues on a couple machines with AVG 6 not playing nice after XP's service pack 2 was installed. The new firewall settings the service pack made were behind most if not all the connection problems and problems scanning email.

I've never heard of this product before, is it good? How does it stack up against something like Norton (which I currently pay for)?AVG V.6 Support To Be Discontinued – image 1Dave Reage - Beta Tester

RE: AVG V.6 Support To Be Discontinued

While I have not run any comparative tests between Norton and AVG, AVG uses much less system resources than Norton. It also has a feature to automatically check for and download new virus definitions. The AVG program is only for virus protection, it does not include all the bells and whistles of the Symantec product. Version 6 worked flawlessly for years on my computer. There appears to be a minor configuration problem with V7, but it will be worked out. It catches all the viruses that arrive here, so I'm happy with it.

Hi Chuck, I have been using Avast! V 4.5 anti-virus from Alwil. It's free & has an auto feature that will auto download the latest virus definitions & program updates. You can configure the type of scan you want. During a scan if it finds a virus, it will tell you verbally as well as sounding a siren. it will ask you if you want to repair, send it to quarantine or delete. I find it a truly great program. Norton wanted $39.95 just for a 1 year update for the virus program.Avast! will also alert you & block any virus on the net as you are browsing. There is no ad-ware or spyware installed with this program. Alwil, the parent Co. sells other programs, the reason for offering Avast! for free. Check it out.http://www.avast.com

I have a laptop from work that uses Norton AV and all my other stuff uses AVG. All tests I have conducted show them to be equal in ability to protect against virii.I have relied on AVG for 3 years. No regrets. Free is good enough.AVG V.6 Support To Be Discontinued – image 8
