All the SD70ACe's aren't worth the time and effort GMD puts in them. In 5 years they'll all be at the scrapper. Their performance as of late is perhaps the worse I've seen with a new locomotive in many many years.Austin
EMD overall, but in recent years their qulatative edge over GE has gone right down the crapper, as has their sales (who else here shares my belief that the SD70ACe is going to be a flop?).EMD's glory days are long gone . Jonathan Nikiforovs. Milepost 180, CP Belleville Sub.

Too Bad Norfolk & Western never built their own diesels like they did their steam, i.e. "Y", "A", "J" class locomotives, I bet they would have been incredible machines. For steam Norfolk and Western's Roanoke Shopsbut for diesels, I do love Alco's "RS" and "century" seriesEMD a close second -------------------------------- R.I.P;Norfolk and Western, at least I got to know ya You WILL find me hanging out on the Pocahontas and Radford Div of NSAndy J
Well, I can't decide. I used to be a hardcore EMD fan. Then, they launched that hideous deformity called the SD70ace. I'm starting to become a fan of the new GE locomotives, especially the ES40DCs that Norfolk Southern has. I saw some shots of them on railpictures.net and they look really sharp. I heard that they have a new V12 diesel engine that can produce as much power as the old FDL16s. I wonder what they would sound like. They would probably have to operate at a higher RPM than the old engines since they have 4 fewer cylinders, so I assume that they sing a higher-pitched tune.
I'm going with Alco. This is, of course, despite the facts that the six-axle Centuries were supposed to be lousy-riding and very fond of excessive maintenance. Seeing N&W 1135 at Roanoke makes it very easy to be fond of these cantankerous beasts. When one takes a look at the low-hood variants, there's nothing like the cab configuration of a C630 for visual appeal. Close to forty years later, neither EMD or GE have managed to make as nifty-looking a cab.And of course, the PA series reigns supreme among car body units.

RE: Hurray for Schenectady!
I read a story in TRAINS Mag once by Steve Lee (the UP Steam guy) and he said that he rode in the first of three C636's on one train and one of the trailing units vibrated so much that it fell over on its side.Anyways, Just an ALCo note, they were the kings of the switcher though -Dave
