Hi Mike,I noticed how "litterfree" your trains and streets were: you're a clean lot then! Come to the UK and have fun catching rats before they catch you. Please don't show any shots of your wide open blue skies, beaches, and babes as this is likely to inflame the disadvataged amongst us.Mike

Absolutely great pictures Mike! Sigh... Wish we still had urban/suburban transportation like that left in Columbus, Ohio. We called them "streetcars", not trams (or "interurbans" if they went from town to town).PaulSI have returned! MANY photos from my trip – image 76

To cut a very long story short, the different gauges is due to the way railways started in this country. Back in the late 1800's, Australia wasn't even a nation and each colony pretty much did their own thing. Victoria and South Australia chose 5'6" (broad gauge), New South Wales chose 4'8½" (standard gauge) while Queensland, Tasmania and Western Australia chose 3'6" (narrow gauge). South Australia later adopted 3'6" for the lines being built in the north of the state. When the trans Australia line was constructed in the early 20th century by the new federal government, this was built to 4'8½".Obviously this was a complete mess that has led to problems ever since. There were numerous break of gauge stations all over the country. Eg: to travel from Sydney to Perth, passengers had to change trains several times as the gauge varied between 4'8½" and 3'6". In the latter half of the 20th century there was some effort made to rectify the situation on interstate lines. In 1962 a 4'8½" line was opened next to the 5'3" line from Albury (Vic/NSW border) to Melbourne. In the late 60's, the 3'6" sections of the trans Australia line were re-gauged to 4'8½" and the first through SG train ran in 1970. In 1995 the Melbourne - Adelaide line was converted to 4'8½" with a new standard gauge line being built from Geelong - Melbourne next to the existing broad gauge lines. There have also other numerous gauge conversions around the country but I can't remember them all and I would need to write a book to cover them! So now in the early 21st century, the states have the following gauges:New South Wales:
4'8½" - Almost the entire state
5'3" - Several Victorian lines crossing the border into southern NSW
3'6" is used on the Zig Zag tourist railway.Victoria:
5'3" - Majority of the state.
4'8½" - Albury to Melb (new in 1962), Melb to Adelaide (re-gauged in 1995) and several grain lines in the western part of the state (re-gauged in 1995).
3'6" and 2'6" are used on tourist railwaysSouth Australia:
5'3" - Originally the main gauge of this state, there is very little left outside the suburban lines around Adelaide, several grain lines and tourist railways.
4'8½" - Most 5'3" and 3'6" lines were either closed or converted to 4'8½" in the 2nd half of the 20th century.
3'6" - Isolated Eyre Peninsula division and tourist railways running on sections of the old 3'6" SAR system.Western Australia:
3'6" - Still used over most of the state's rail network
4'8½" - Perth to SA border and branches out of Kalgoorlie. It's also used on the mining railways in the Pilbara.Queensland:
3'6" - The majority of the state uses 3'6". However, this hasn't held the state back. QR regularly runs passenger trains at 160km/h between Brisbane and Rockhampton and holds the Australian speed record at 210km/h. Their coal train operations are also very impressive.
4'8½" - One line from the NSW border to the state capital of Brisbane was built to this gauge.
2'0" - Queensland has an extensive network of cane railways using this gauge.Northern Territory:
4'8½" - Only one railway line now exists in NT. It's the SA border to Darwin line that was completed last year. Used to have and isolated 3'6" line at Darwin as well as the old 3'6" line to Alice Springs.Tasmania:
3'6" - Since the state isn't connected to the mainland, there has only been one gauge widely used in the state.--Victorian Railfan Web Site:

Hehehe...Dave...you should have heard the 2 EL's come by at nearly 70mph (120kph), they were pulling pretty much nothing (just baretables and about 20 containers)....the FDL-16's were screaming to the heavens! I must admit...some of the EMD stuff sounds great! Like that S302 notching up.Gotta love the 5 NR's on the train though...NR Class locos are C40-9's with some variations...like variable horsepower (2500hp, 3200hp or 4000hp settings).>Mike Forster<
