9/11 a video game, WTF? – image 1

Gamespot:
: When posts with headlines such as "9/11: The Game" started popping up on various forums, many thought the game would an offensive creation by terrorist sympathizers, similar to the (unfortunately) abundant suicide-bomber flash games. Like most things in life, however, the reality was much more complex. According to Replay, the game, entitled Survivor, "is a third-person disaster survival game with highly interactive locations, based on famous, authentic-historical disaster scenarios." This will not only include the horrors of 9/11, but the 1985 Mexico City Earthquake, the 1945 Hiroshima bombing, and the sinking of the Titanic. Why would anyone want to experience any of these hellish events? "We call this unique genre 'Reality Gaming,'" goes Replay's sales pitch, "The highly original single-player game concept has never been seen before." Incidentally, the highly original single-player game has not yet found a publisher.Link:

1912: Titanic sinking
1945: Hiroshima bombing
1985: Mexico City earthquake
1992: Hurricane Andrew
2001: World Trade Center attacks
2004: Paraguay - Fire in shopping mall

RE: 9/11 a video game, WTF???

Got to agree that it's in bad taste, granted there was a game out based around the Titanic disaster(name escapes me at the moment) but it was more cloak and dagger involving time travel with the title ship serving as the setting that depending how well you did time was altered, bad ending was as history writes the ship goes down, WWI happens etc not so bad ending WWI happens but a painting the hero gets off the ship(secret code on the back of the canvas)but the painter from Austria(signs his paintings Adolf H ) becomes a big wheel in the art world and them WWII doesn't happen and best ending ship is saved, hero gets the girl,WWI doesn't happen and mankind moves on to a world of peace and prosperity.Gary S

RE: 9/11 a video game, WTF???

It's a touchy issue to be sure, but in time something like it will probably become a bit more acceptable, if not popular. I suspect that WWII vets would have found some of today's WWII sims in bad taste if the capability to create them had been there in the mid-1940s. But at this point in history, those games can (and do) represent a means of education and glorification, so they're not looked upon as being a trivialization of what they actually experienced (although there are some out there that do voice that concern, mostly from the perspective of trivializing violence in general). A pretty good argument could be made that some of the combat flight sims targeting Iraq or other Middle Eastern countries are in similarly bad taste. It all depends on what side of the weapon you're on.Andy

While the concept of the game is horrible, you got to admit the graphics are amazing.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-10-04 AT 07:06 AM (EDT)

After checking out the site,I have "less" of a problem with it.It seems that there are rescue missions(9/11) and escape missions(Titanic). If done with respect,it might not be so bad.I don't know if I would want it though.I still have a problem with the 9/11 mission and the Paraguay Fire mission. But the Titanic,Hurricane Andrew, and Mexico city quake could be interesting if done well. And the only way I want to play a Hiroshima scenario is as a crewman on the Enola Gay.

Also,I enjoy wargames.Sims,FPS's,stategic, and tactical wargames are among my favorite. But I never forget I'm reliving a disaster when I play them.

I agree,Although a little touchy of a subject right now. I'm sure many would purchase such a game.Honest opinion required by all of you .... If it had every disaster BUT the WTC disaster would it then be a "cool" concept of a game ?Just a thought.WW2 vets may find games such as Call of Duty of MOHAA unacceptable at the time of their release.Their worst battle will be finding a publisher.LaterTim Kent – 96th_Malice - Winnipeg CanadaProud member of the - NO TRAIL CN SD60 - club !!

Tim
Just my .02 but I'd say cut it off at the within 10-12 year mark, 9/11 and the 04 shopping mall are still just a bit too fresh to be considered entertainmentGary S

RE: 9/11 a video game, WTF???

Gary, it was called "Titanic: An Adventure out of Time"i have it, its not that bad, its basically a beat the clock stragity game, which i never was able to do...this is just distasteful. esp the 9/11 part of it.. thats not a game, thats not something to even look back on and smile about in any way shape or form.. thats just wrong to try and add that to a game.
